Sang-Hyun Song (born December 21, 1941 in Seoul ) is a South Korean lawyer . From 2003 to 2015 he was a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague and from 2009 to 2015 its president.

Life

Song grew up in Seoul, which was shaped by the Japanese occupation and armed conflicts during his childhood. In August 1945 his grandfather, editor of a newspaper, was murdered. After the invasion of the North Korean People's Army in Seoul in 1950, he experienced the terror with the many people executed on the streets.

Song studied law at Seoul National University , where he after the military coup in 1961 in 1963, the Bachelor of Laws acquired, and he received in 1964 admitted to the lawyer . As a Fulbright Fellow , he was able to continue his studies at Tulane University Law School , he received a diploma in comparative law from the University of Cambridge and received his doctorate in 1970 from Cornell Law School .

In 1972 Song was appointed professor of law at Seoul National University, where he taught until 2007. He also worked as a visiting professor at numerous other universities, including Harvard , New York and Melbourne . Song also worked as an attorney for a New York law firm.

Song was involved in the reform of South Korean procedural law as a member of the advisory committee of the Supreme Court of South Korea and the Ministry of Justice. He is vice chairman of the South Korean UNICEF committee and co-founder of the Legal Aid Center for Women and the Childhood Leukemia Foundation in Seoul .

In February 2003, Song was elected for a three-year term as a judge at the International Criminal Court, where he served on the Appeals Division. In 2006 he was confirmed in office; his regular nine-year term ran until 2015. In March 2009 he was elected President of the Court of Justice for three years and in 2012 he was re-elected for a further three years.
