The Sankt-Nicolai-Kirche (spelling also as Sankt-Nikolai ) is a Protestant church in Oschersleben in Saxony-Anhalt .

architecture

The church dates back to the second half of the 14th century. The towers to the west of the nave date from this time. Their design was based on the double tower facades of the Magdeburg churches. The towers have low baroque hoods.

Otherwise the church building dates from 1881. It was built in the neo-Gothic style. The pointing north and south transepts and the choir forming polygonal. The external appearance is characterized by regular ashlar blocks . The structure is made by tracery windows , which have two lanes in the choir and transepts, but three lanes in the nave . There are buttresses between the windows.

inner space

The nave has three aisles. The ceiling is designed as a ribbed vault and rests on slender octagonal pillars. On a three-sided gallery are the remains of an organ built by Wilhelm Rühlmann with a preserved neo-Gothic organ prospect .

The baptism, made of sandstone in 1661, is from the previous church and is located in the northern apse, the so-called baptistery. It is adorned with plastic figurative decoration and was donated by the dam people . In the course of the neo-Gothic design of the church, a new baptismal font in neo-Gothic style was purchased. This is located in the crossing and, in contrast to the older font, is still in regular use. It is worth mentioning an epitaph in the church for Samuel Geelhut, who died in 1676 .

In 1646, Heinrich II Erndel , the personal physician of the Saxon Elector, was buried in the previous building .

The artist Günter Grohs , who lives in Wernigerode, has been entrusted with the design of the interior (windows, principal pieces, paraments, wall paintings in the choir) by the community. At Easter in 2007, the three newly designed choir windows were put into service in a first section by the regional bishop Axel Noack . Following on from this, the south transept windows were handed over to the community in 2016 by State Bishop Ilse Junkermann . All glazing produced so far was carried out by the F. Schneemelcher glass workshop , Quedlinburg, in close collaboration with the artist. It is planned to complete the entire interior project with the participation of the community and other donors.

Surroundings

To the north of the church is the town's market square with the baroque town hall of Oschersleben . The parish rectory is located east of the Nicolaikirche. According to the inscription, it was built as a half-timbered building as early as 1661. Directly in front of the west side of the towers is another impressive half-timbered house. The building (Halberstädter Straße 25) dates back to 1600, but has been rebuilt several times. The upper floor protrudes over the ground floor.
