Sankt Maurenzen ( Czech Kostel svatého Mořice ) is a medieval fortified church and former parish in Mouřenec (Maurenzen) on the territory of the municipality of Dlouhá Ves in the Czech Republic .

geography

The church is located in the Bohemian Forest above the villages of Rajsko (Roisko) and Annín (Annathal) at an altitude of 620 m on a promontory surrounded on three sides by the Otava .

history

St. Maurenzen is one of the oldest churches in the Bohemian Forest. Its origins probably go back to St. Gunther , who lived as a hermit a few kilometers west on Gunthersberg . The dominant location above the river bend suggests that a fortification had already existed here before . The current church was built around 1230 and dedicated to St. Mauritius consecrated. There were close relationships with the Lower Bavarian Benedictine monastery Niederaltaich , whose church bears the same patronage . The first documentary mention dates from 1360.

Until the expulsion of the German Bohemian Forests, St. Maurenzen was the parish church for the surrounding villages and hamlets. After 1946 it was left to decay. Since 1991, the monument has been restored on the initiative of a German support group in cooperation with Czech companies. The church, newly consecrated in 1993 by Bishop Antonín Liška from Budweis , is intended to serve as a German-Czech meeting place. Since then, bilingual services have been held several times a year.

description

The core of the late Romanesque sacral building is dominated by a squat square tower that dates back to the time it was founded in the 13th century. The nave was built in simple early Gothic forms; frescoes discovered inside are dated to the early 14th century. A bell cast in 1329, which escaped the smelting campaigns in the two world wars, has also survived from this period. The ringing was supplemented in 2003 by two new bells, which were manufactured in the Rudolf Perner bell foundry in Passau . According to dendrochronological studies, the church received a new roof in 1542.

The baroque furnishings were largely lost after the Second World War ; they were restored in the course of restorations from 1991 to 1993. A special feature of the fortified church is the ossuary integrated into the wall ring . Around the church is the cemetery of the former parish.
