Santa Inês , officially Portuguese Município de Santa Inês , is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Maranhão . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 89,044 inhabitants, who live on a community area of around 786.7 km² and are called Santa-Inesenser ( santa-inesenses ). The municipality ranks 13th out of 217 municipalities in the state. The distance to the capital São Luís is 250 km. It is part of the geostatistical greater region Região Nordeste ( Northeast Region ).
The Centro de Estudos Superiores de Santa Inês (CESSIN) branch of the Universidade Estadual do Maranhão is located in Santa Inês . The place can be reached via the BR-316 , BR-222 and MA-320 . The municipality has the regional airport Santa Inês ( Aeroporto Regional João Silva ) and the airport Aeródromo de Santa Inês .

Surrounding communities are in the northeast Monção , in the east Vitorino Freire and Bela Vista do Maranhão , in the southeast Altamira do Maranhão , in the west Pindaré-Mirim and Tufilândia .
