history

The east-facing basilica was built from 1365 to 1388 and opened to celebrate the birth of Giovanni Maria Visconti , a son of Gian Galeazzo Visconti . Before the terracotta gable facade in 1497 was a Renaissance - portico of the built Donato Bramante is attributed and was completed in the 16th century by Ptolemy Rinaldi. The pronaos rests on Gothic capital columns , adjoining it is a portico. The church was elevated to a parish church in 1578 during a visit by St. Archbishop Charles Borromeo . In the 18th century a new sacristy was built on the north side of the choir.

The inside of the church has three aisles, and the 15th century baptistery is decorated with sgraffito paintings. The interior changes made to the building in 1740 are now attributed to Francesco Croce, the central nave was raised in a baroque interior design as a basilica with round cantilever windows that protrude into the barrel vault with stitch caps . Five new chapels were built on the sides of the church during the same period. The 19th century brought new renovations, particularly to the vaulted frescos and the balustrades and marble floors.

The organ above the entrance is the work of the brothers Luigi and Celestino Balbiani from Milan, built in 1935. The church was restored again from 1987 to 1990, again paying special attention to the frescoes.
