The Church of Santa Sofia is the main church ( Collegiata ) of Giugliano in Campania , northwest of Naples . It is located in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti 2. In it is the grave of the famous storyteller Giovan Battista Basile .

history

Santa Sofia was built between 1622 and 1693 and is generally believed to be based on plans by Domenico Fontana . According to a plaque on the right side of the facade, the writer Giovan Battista Basile was buried in the church on February 23, 1632.

Between 1730 and 1745, the building was renovated by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro , who also designed the new stucco decor and the marble pulpit .

The original dome was bombed during World War II and later reconstructed.

Reliefs on the campanile

The campanile was built by Nicola Campitelli between 1776 and 1785; it originally stood further apart from the church, but when the neighboring street was widened in 1890, it was removed stone by stone and rebuilt in its current position. At its base, three marble bas-reliefs were set, depicting “the shining sun”, “Saint Sofia” and a “pregnant woman” - the latter became the emblem and coat of arms of the city of Giuliano. The three reliefs were stolen in 1994, but could be replaced with reproductions with the help of Pro Loco Giuliano.

In 2018 the church underwent a restoration .

description

The facade with its classic forms, the smooth pilaster strips made of piperno and the triangular gable still corresponds to the Mannerist canon of forms, the severity of which is only somewhat broken by the neat portal.

The interior

The interior with its elegant and fine stucco decoration is one of the most beautiful spatial creations of the Neapolitan late baroque in Campania . It consists of one nave with a total of 10 chapels , five on each side. There are also the large chapels at the end of the two transepts. The altars are decorated with paintings by Fabrizio Santafede , Giuseppe Marullo , Girolamo Muziano , Domenico Viola , Nicola and Aloisio Cacciapuoti. The floor is covered with yellow and white Maiolica tiles. In the apse you can see frescoes from the 18th century.

The baroque organ was built by the important organ builder Fabrizio Cimino, who was born in Giugliano himself.

Particularly noteworthy is the large Cappella di San Giuliano to the left of the nave, which is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, Julianus of Sora . According to Agostino Basile (in: Memorie Istoriche della Terra di San Giuliano , Naples 1800) the city of Giuliano was spared during an eruption of Vesuvius in 1631 and since the residents attributed this to the protection of St. Julian, they decided to honor the said To erect chapel. The necessary funds for the decoration in the form of 204 ducats were donated in 1639 by a doctor Orazio de Blasio, who wanted to be buried in front of the saint's altar. The chapel has a rich sculptural decoration: the figures on the pillars of the dome are allegories of theological virtues , the reliefs above show the four evangelists .
The Neapolitan painter Pacecco de Rosa (1607–1657) created five paintings for the chapel: the martyrdom of St. Sophia , the martyrdom of St. Julianus , Santa Giuliana in prison , San Deodato abate and San Romito diacono . These pictures were stolen in a brazen art theft (or church robbery ) on November 11, 1998. 17 years later, in 2015, two of Pacecco's pictures - the martyrdom of St. Julianus and San Deodato abate - were found again at a collector in Recanati (Ancona), not least because the Pro Loco Giuliano Association published a catalog in 2003 on "30 years of art theft in San Giuliano" . The two images were brought back to the church during the celebrations in honor of Saint Giuliano on January 27, 2016.
