Santana is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Nisa . 404 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).
geography
The municipality is located in the upper Alentejo , which is slowly becoming hilly here , between the district town of Nisa, about 15 km south, the north-west bordering River Tejo , and about 8 km north-east, Vila Velha de Ródão . The three villages of the municipality are on hills ( port .: Montes ).
history
Excavations point to a settlement of the Arabs who won gold here. The current places of the community emerged during the resettlement during the local Reconquista at the end of the 12th century. As early as the middle of the 13th century, they were mentioned as places subject to tax at Lafões Monastery .
Until January 5, 1959, they were localities of the municipality of São Simão , in order to form an independent municipality in the Nisa district since then.

In addition to sacred buildings , including the parish church, the archaeological excavation site Estação arqueológico do Conhal , u. a. with Arab gold mines, under monument protection.

- Monte do Arneiro or just Arneiro
- Monte do Pardo
Arneiro, where the municipal administration (port .: Junta de Freguesia ) has its seat, can be considered the capital .

After it was founded in 1959, in line with the development in large parts of the Alentejo, the municipality of Santana has experienced a continuing decline in population since then. In addition to the persistently low birth rate, the reason is the migration to the metropolitan areas, for example to the industrial suburbs of the Margem Sul do Tejo , located on the south bank of the Tagus opposite Lisbon, in the greater Lisbon area in the early 1960s .
economy
The community is dominated by agriculture. The production of cork and olive oil , the cultivation of cereals and vegetables, grazing cattle and river fishing are the most important economic activities. Regional handicrafts are also produced here. a. traditional embroidery , lace , and miniatures of wooden boats.
