history

In the 17th century there was a villa with a garden belonging to Antonio Orsini , grandson of Cardinal Flavio Orsini , in the area of ​​the church . In 1615 the property was bought by the Augustinian Discalceaten to build their seat in Rome and a seminarist home. There was also a church of St. Anthony here , but it was unsuitable for the order.

The construction was done in two phases. The foundation stone was laid on April 3, 1633 and the first part designed by Carlo Buzio was completed in 1635. On January 17th, 1636 the solemn departure of the community from Santa Maria del Popolo took place. The original Augustinian order remained there. The second part of the church and the facade were built between 1671 and 1674 under the direction of Carlo Tainaldi. The church was consecrated on January 28, 1675. Between 1678 and 1690, with the generosity of Giorgio Bolognetti , Bishop of Rieti , the marble interior was installed.

On June 7, 1967 she was by Pope Paul VI. elevated to title diakonia.

The facade of the church is by Carlo Rainaldi and is made of travertine and bricks. Above the single entrance door is a tympanum , a rectangular window and a lunette . They are framed by four Corinthian columns.

The church consists of a nave with a barrel vault and three chapels on each side. It is 27 m long and 15 m wide. The altar is a square with a side length of 7 m. In the vault is a fresco by Giacinto Brandi , which depicts the Assumption of Mary and the devotion by the evangelists. On the cornice of the vault there are stucco statues depicting angels , prophets and other figures from the Old Testament .

On the left are the chapels of St. Thomas of Villanova , St. Joseph and the Mother of Divine Help. On the right there is a cruciform chapel and the chapels of Nicholas of Tolentino and St. Anne .

The sanctuary and the altar are characterized by the richness of the materials used. The altarpiece is by Giacinto Brandi and depicts Mary crowned by Jesus ( 1679 ).
