Luigi de Magistris (Cardinal)
Luigi Cardinal de Magistris (born February 23, 1926 in Cagliari ) is an emeritus pro-major penitentiary .
Life
Luigi de Magistris, the youngest of a total of six children of a doctor, initially studied at the University of Cagliari. Called a priest at an early age by his father, he finally enrolled at the Pontifical Roman Seminary and was ordained priestly for the Archdiocese of Cagliari on April 12, 1952 . During his studies in Rome he was particularly influenced by the lecturers and later cardinals Pietro Parente and Pietro Palazzini . From 1955 to 1958 he taught at the Archbishop's Seminary in Cagliari. In 1958 he was appointed General Secretary of the Athenaeum to the Vatican. In 1967 he became head of the office of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , which he remained until 1969. Pope Paul VI awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on August 27, 1973 .
Pope John Paul II appointed him Official of the Apostolic Penitentiary on April 11, 1979, and Titular Bishop of Nova on March 6, 1996 . The Archbishop of Genoa , Giovanni Cardinal Canestri , donated him episcopal ordination on April 28 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Ottorino Pietro Alberti , Archbishop of Cagliari , and Tarcisio Pillolla , Auxiliary Bishop in Cagliari.
On November 22, 2001 he was appointed titular archbishop pro hac vice of Nova and pro-major penitentiary . On October 4, 2003, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. In 2010, De Magistris returned to his hometown of Cagliari for health reasons.
In the solemn consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Santissimi Nomi di Gesù e Maria in Via Lata in the college of cardinals .
