The ferry Sarfaq Ittuk was built in 1992 at the Danish Ørskov Christensen Stålskibsværft in Frederikshavn with hull number 156. The original ship length was 49.65 meters, the ship width 11.10 meters and the average draft 3.40 meters. In 2000, the ship was extensively modernized in the Polish shipyard Stocznia Gdańska and lengthened to 73 meters. The new mean draft after the renovation is 3.70 meters.
Incidents
Incident 2012
On October 15, 2012, the ferry Sarfaq Ittuk ran aground off Qaqortoq . There was no water ingress and no oil leaks, although the ship was temporarily overhanging at 30 degrees. The trawler Polar Nattoralik made the first rescue attempts . The attempt to tow the ship free failed and were stopped in the morning. Towards evening the ship was released again without assistance due to a rising water level. Divers checked the hull for possible damage and whether the Sarfaq Ittuk can resume ferry traffic as planned. There is no big enough shipyard in Greenland to hang up the ship, so that if hull damage were found, it would have to be repaired in Iceland. However, the damage to the Sarfaq Ittuk after its accident off Qaqortoq was more severe than initially assumed. When it hit the ground, the rudder and rudder stock were affected. A repair on land became inevitable. The Arctic Umiaq Line did not expect a return to the ferry service before mid-November due to the necessary repairs. Until then, all departures had to be canceled. The shipping company was forced to organize a new program for the affected settlements that the Sarfaq Ittuk was supposed to call at.
Incident 2018
On March 21, 2018, the ship got stuck in the ice south of Arsuk in the Torsukattak fjord .
