Satoru Oda
Satoru Oda ( jap. 尾田悟 , Oda Satoru * 27. September 1927 in Fukuoka prefecture , † 2016 ) was a Japanese musician ( tenor saxophone , Arrangement ), which both in jazz and in the light music and easy listening operated.
Act
Satoru played in the Tokyo jazz scene from the 1950s a. a. with the singer Martha Miyake . In 1967 he put together with Akira Miyazawa the easy listening LP Musebinaku Tenor Sax ( む せ び な く テ ナ ー サ ッ ク ス , ~ Tenāsakkusu ; Teichiku Records), with pop classics such as " Smoke Gets in Your Eyes ", " Fly Me to the Moon " and Jazz titles like “ Autumn Leaves ” or “ My Funny Valentine ”; From 1964 to 1968 followed a number of albums such as South Sea Island Magic and Tenor Sax Plays Japanese Hit Songs on King Records under the band name Satoru Oda and His Group with Strings . He presented further LPs on the King label as Satoru Oda & His Group until 1972 , such as Tenor Sax in “Latin Mood” (1964) or Double Deluxe / Tenor Sax No Miryoku (1969), with popular film themes such as “From Russia With Love "And" Goldfinger ". In the 70s and 80s he played with the formation Swing Session , with Teddy Wilson , Eiji Kitamura , Yuzuru Sera , Kohji Fujika , the Eiji Kitamura All Stars ( Bei Mir Bist Do Schoen ) and with Raymond Conde .
Under his own name, Oda presented the live recording Live at the New Five Spot , made in 1976 , on which he can be heard in changing line- ups with Ichiro Masuda , Keiko Nemoto , Ikuo Shiozaki , Seiji Okamura , Nagamasa Harada , Toshihilo Itoh , Taketoshi Igarashi and Kaoru Ishiuda . At the end of 1982 the album All of Me was created , which Satoru recorded with Teddy Wilson, Yukio Ikezawa and Tsuyoshi Watanabe . From 1988 there were several studio encounters with pianist Hank Jones , to be heard on the duo album Lover Man (Paddle Wheel), the two albums Gi-n-ma-ku Vol.1 / 2 (1991, with Ken Peplowski , Marcus McLaurine , Keith Copeland ) and Standard Jazz for Lovers Vol. 1/2 (1992, with Warren Vaché , Mads Vinding , Billy Hart ) and Vol. 3/4 , with George Mraz and Lewis Nash in the rhythm section . He also worked with Slide Hampton in the 1990s . The discographer Tom Lord lists Oda in the field of jazz between 1958 and 2001 with 29 recording sessions.
