description

Round-leaved Saxifrage ( Saxifraga rotundifolia )

The round-leaved saxifrage grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters. The basal leaves are arranged in rosettes and are rounded, kidney-shaped, serrated and up to 5 cm wide. The shape is rounded to kidney-shaped with a heart-shaped base.

The flowering period extends from May to September. The round-leaved saxifrage is free-flowering. The flowers are in a loose panicle inflorescence on long-stalked, glandular-haired branches. The leaves of the inflorescence quickly become smaller towards the top. The sepals are broadly lanceolate and pointed. The petals are up to 10 mm long and white with red points in the upper half and yellow in the lower half (honeysuckle for the flower visitors).

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Systematics

The first publication of was by Carl von Linné .

There are about two subspecies of Saxifraga rotundifolia :

  • Saxifraga rotundifolia subsp. chrysospleniifolia (Boiss.) DAWebb ; it occurs only on the Balkan Peninsula and in the Aegean Sea
  • Saxifraga rotundifolia L. subsp. rotundifolia

Occurrence

The distribution area includes the mountains of central and southern Europe , from central Spain and the Pyrenees to the French low mountain ranges , the Alps , the Apennines and the Balkan Peninsula to Romania and the Caucasus .

The round-leaved saxifrage prefers shady and moist locations at altitudes between 600 and 2500 meters. In the Allgäu Alps in Bavaria it rises to the Upper Biber Alpe northeast of Warth up to 2000 meters above sea level. It grows on brook banks, in tall herbaceous areas , in block corridors and in mixed mountain forests. He is a species of character of the order Adenostyletalia.

particularities

In contrast to other types of stone breakers, it does not need evaporation or wind protection as it grows at low altitudes or in damp areas.

Healing effect

It was used in folk medicine for diseases of the lungs and is therefore sometimes still called Lungechrut in Switzerland .
