Schaghticoke ˈskætɨkoʊk is a town in Rensselaer County , New York in the United States . At the 2010 census, the Town of Schaghticoke had 7679 inhabitants. The Schaghticoke are an Indian tribe that originally lived in this area. The town is on the northern edge of the county, north of Troy . Within the town there is a village of the same name and parts of the Village of Valley Falls .
history
The first permanent settlement by European settlers began in 1668. The Town of Schaghticoke was incorporated in 1788 and emerged from a district that was still part of Albany County in 1772 .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 134.3 km², of which 129.3 km² is land and 5.1 km² (= 3.76%) is water.
The northern boundary of the city forms the boundary with Washington County and the western boundary is formed by the Hudson River, which is also the boundary with Saratoga County .
The Hoosic River flows through the area of the town and forms its southern boundary in the east of the district. The river flows into the Hudson River in the west of Schaghticokes .
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Schaghticoke inhabited 7,456 people. The population density was 57.7 people per km ². There were 2823 housing units at an average of 21.8 per km ². The Schaghticoke population was 97.57% White , 1.26% Black or African American , 0.17% Native American , 0.36% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 0.13% said to be of other races and 0.50% named two or more races. 0.66% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Schaghticoke distributed to 2714 households out of which 35.8% were living in children under 18 years. 64.2% of households were married, 8.7% had a female head of the household without a husband and 22.5% were not families. 17.7% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.12.
The population was divided into 26.3% minors, 6.5% 18–24 year olds, 29.3% 25–44 year olds, 25.5% 45–64 year olds and 12.5% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were 98.7 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 95.3 men.
