The Scarlet Mistelfresser ( Dicaeum cruentatum , Syn. Xuanmu cruentata ) is a species of bird in the family of Mistelfresser (Dicaeidae).
The bird is found in Southeast Asia in Bangladesh , China , Hong Kong , India , Cambodia , the Malay Peninsula , Malaysia , Myanmar , Singapore , Thailand and Vietnam .
The circulation area covers moist tropical or subtropical deep forest, mangrove forest , lowland forest , groves occasionally in gardens .
features
The species is 7 to 9 cm tall, the male weighs between 5 and 8, the female about 6 g. The male has a navy blue upper side with a broad light red stripe from the crown to the base of the tail. The rest of the head, throat and chest are black, the wing covers and the short tail are glossy blue-black. There is a chest band below the throat, the flanks are gray. The underside is gray to white. The iris is dark, the slightly curved bill is gray. Like young birds, the female is predominantly olive-green with a black tail and a scarlet tail on the upper side. Young birds have an orange bill and no red rump .

- D. c. simalurense Solomon Islands , 1961 - Simeuluë northwest of Sumatra
- D. c. niasense Meyer de Schauensee & Ripley , 1940 - Nias west of Sumatra
- D. c. batuense Richmond , 1912 - Batu Islands and Mentawai Islands southwest of Sumatra
- D. c. nigrimentum Salvadori , 1874 - Borneo
voice
The call of the male is described as a “chip-chip” and as a loud staccato-like “tchij-tchik” similar to the tailor 's bird (Orthotomus) as well as continuous chirping during feeding.
Way of life
The diet consists mainly of fruits , preferably Mutingia calabura and Melastoma malabathricum , figs and mistletoe . The species mostly lives in the treetops, also hunts insects, spiders, also feeds on nectar .
The breeding season is between March and August in Nepal and India, between February and April in Myanmar, between January and April in Thailand. Both parent birds build the nest and share the rearing work.

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
