Schefflera morototoni is a tree in the Aralia family. It occurs in central to northern South America , in Central America to Mexico and in the Caribbean .

description

Schefflera morototoni grows as a fast-growing, evergreen tree with only branches at the top , often with a relatively small, narrow crown, up to 20–30 meters high. The trunk diameter reaches 40-70 centimeters. The bark is grayish to reddish brown and relatively smooth and cracked to rough and slightly scaly.

The alternate, schraubigen and very long-handled, light leathery leaves to the branch tips are composed palmate with 7-12 leaflets . The long, stiff, thick and bald petiole is broadened at the base, with a leaf sheath (fused stipules ) and an ligule and it is up to 60-100 centimeters long. The entire-margined leaflets are stalked and obovate or ovate to elongated, at the tip they are pointed to pointed or tail. The leaflet stalks are 3–14 centimeters long and the leaflets 8–45 centimeters. The leaflets are dark green on top, glabrous and short on the underside, densely yellowish to rusty and soft, with velvety hairs. The leaf margin is often wavy and the leaf base is slightly heart-shaped to rounded.

Schefflera morototoni is andromonözisch , so male and hermaphrodite flowers can be found on an individual. Terminal and pubescent, compound, long panicles with racemose side axes are formed. The hermaphroditic or functionally male, five-fold and stalked, small flowers with a double flower envelope are arranged in stalked, dold-like groups. The flower stalk and the flower cup are hairy. The calyx is small with minimal tips, the small, flabby petals are yellowish-white and the short 5 stamens are almost sessile. The ovary is underneath with two styles with upright to later curved, red and tongue-shaped scar branches .

There are small, laterally flattened, white-bluish "frosted", slightly hairy and usually two-seeded (up to three), dark brown to -violette, leathery drupes with sepals and scar remains formed at the top. They are about 5-6 millimeters long and 7-10 millimeters wide. The flat, yellowish-beige seeds are semicircular and about 5 millimeters in size.

Taxonomy

The first description of Basionyms Panax morototoni was in 1775 by Jean Baptiste Christophe Fusée Aublet in Hist. Pl. Guiane 2: 949. The division into the genus Schefflera to Schefflera morotoni took place in 1984 by Bassett Maguire, Julian Alfred Steyermark and David Gamman Frodin in Mem. New York Bot. Gard. 38: 51.

There are some other synonyms known such as Aralia micans Willd. ex Schult. , Didymopanax morototoni (Aubl.) Decne. & Planch. , Oreopanax morototoni (Aubl.) Pittier , Sciodaphyllum paniculatum Britton or Panax splendens Kunth and Schefflera splendens (Kunth) Frodin ex Lindeman u. a.

use

The wood is relatively light, soft and not durable, it is known as Morototo or Matchwood . It is used for veneering and for making matches.
