The shipping company of the island community of Langeoog has been operating ferry and rail traffic between the North Sea island of Langeoog and Bensersiel on the mainland since 1927 . Among other things, excursions to the neighboring islands are also offered.

history

In 1899 the first pier on Langeoog was built. However, until the end of 1906 it was only approached by horse-drawn carriages . This meant that the trip was only possible during low tide . For the first time was ship operating between the mainland and the island by the shipping company Esens-operated Langeoog. In the summer of 1906, the shipping company wanted to build the first motorboat. At that time the Loccum monastery , which had a large accommodation facility on Langeoog , refused a grant of 18,000 RM. In the summer of 1909, the Curator , one of the boats that operated in winter, got an engine. As the number of guests and income increased, the island of Langeoog had the first motor ship Langeoog built in 1914 to make better use of the water . In 1915 the Langeoog and another ship of the shipping company , the Empress Auguste Victoria , were confiscated by the German Navy and transferred to Bremerhaven . They were converted and later used as minesweepers in the Baltic Sea . The shipping continued with the Curator .

Langeoog IV

In between the shipping was completely stopped because the operators believed that they could earn more with fishing . After the end of the war in 1918, the Empress Auguste Victoria was restored and reinstated. In 1920 the second passenger ship, the then Langeoog II , was put into service. In 1923 it was sold again. In return , the shipping company bought the Langeoog back from the Navy and put it back into operation. In 1926, the island community of Langeoog began to compete with the Esens-Bensersiel-Langeoog shipping company with five smaller motor boats .

The actual shipping of the island community of Langeoog was founded on January 28, 1927 after the island community bought the shipping company for 100,000 RM. In the same year, the Meyer Werft in Papenburg commissioned the new construction of the twin screw motor ships Langeoog III and Langeoog IV .

In 1934 the “Bensersieler Tief” was excavated so that shipping was independent of the tide. In 1936 the landing stage was so damaged by a storm that it was impossible to moor. The island community decided to rebuild and convert to a motorized island railway for 216,000 RM. From 1937 to 1941 the Luftwaffe built the first port. The last horse-drawn carriage was used on July 2, 1937. In 1938 all icebreakers and cargo ships were bought up and used for passenger traffic. In 1939, when the war broke out, shipping was completely stopped. In 1945 after the end of the war, all runways at the disused airport were blown up and the construction tracks dismantled.

Between 1950 and 1971 the old ships were sold and new ones bought. The Langeoog IV (1927) continued as Spiekeroog IV for the neighboring island of Spiekeroog . The current Langeoog I is still in operation today. In 1972 the passenger ship Lili Marleen was christened and put into service by the singer Lale Andersen, who at that time lived on Langeoog. In 1978 the handling facilities in Langeoog and Bensersiel were renewed and in 1979 the first large transport ships Langeoog III and Langeoog IV were built. The Langeoog III , a 495 GRT ship with two 726 HP engines, a maximum speed of 12 knots and a transport capacity of 500 (winter) and 800 (summer) passengers was launched on March 5, 1979. That at the Meyerwerft and The ship built by the Julius Diedrich shipyard in Oldersum corresponds in terms of technical data to the sister ship Langeoog IV . The acquisition costs for both ships were DM 6 million each.

In 1992 the new passenger ship Langeoog II was put into operation, replacing Lili Marleen . In 1995 the island railway's vehicle fleet was completely renewed with five locomotives and twelve passenger cars and in 1996 a new island station was built. Between 1998 and 1999 the tracks at the port were rebuilt and renewed.

In the winter of 2009 / spring 2010 a redesign (conversion and new construction) of the ferry pier in Bensersiel was carried out.
