history

Foundation and first years

The company's history began with the founding general assembly of the Swiss Steamboat Company for the Untersee and Rhine on May 19, 1864 in Diessenhofen . The first two steamboats Arenaberg and Rheinfall were put into operation in April and May of the same year . The two ships were built by Escher Wyss & Cie. in Zurich . In 1870 the Hohenklingen was built as a replacement for the Rhine Falls , which had sunk due to a boiler explosion , but sold to Württemberg in 1872 for lack of profitability . In 1899 the Wilhelm von Württemberg was rented and in 1901 exchanged for the Hohenklingen . At first the Hohenklingen was only rented, but it was bought back two years later. In 1913 the Schaffhausen , the last steamship of the URh (built by Gunnar Hammershaimb at the Sulzer brothers in Winterthur ), came into service. In 1936 the company was renamed the Schweizerische Schifffahrtsgesellschaft Untersee und Rhein . In the same year the Arenenberg and Munot , which had been built by the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn on Lake Constance , went into operation. The Arenenberg's hull was completely welded, which was very advanced for the time. The Sulzer brothers were the manufacturers of the hull and the drive motor. The shell was transported by means of a low-loader in a road transport.

Second World War

During the Second World War, the Schaffhausen together with the Hohenklingen (in operation from 1870 to 1957) maintained the demand traffic between Schaffhausen and the provisional terminus Gottlieben (the Konstanzer Seerhein was not allowed to be used during the war). Due to the shortage of coal, the ships were fired with wood from depots.

Modification of the fleet

The company's fleet has changed dramatically since the war. In 1956 the Kreuzlingen (Bodan shipyard, Sulzer) was put into service, a year later the Stein am Rhein (Bodan shipyard, Sulzer) was added. The Thurgau began its service in 1965 , and the Ursula tour boat was purchased by the Duisburg port administration. A milestone in the company's development was the commissioning of the Schaffhausen , the flagship of the shipping company, built by the Bodan shipyard in 1970 . It was the first ship on Lake Constance to receive Schottel rudder propellers. The main engines were supplied by MWM (Motorenwerke Mannheim). The Schaffhausen , with a length of 50 meters and a load capacity of 700 people, is the largest ship in the URh fleet. Of all Swiss ships on the whole of Lake Constance, it has the greatest lifting capacity. The new Arenenberg was put into service in 1983 and the new Munot in 1998 .

During this time the Hohenklingen paddle steamer was taken out of service in 1957, and ten years later, despite violent protests from the population and rescue attempts, the last steamship on Lake Constance , the Schaffhausen . In 1983 the old Arenenberg from 1936 was scrapped and the Ursula was sold . The old Munot was sold in 1998 to the Dutchman Jan Hofstra, who has restored the ship to its original condition in the Netherlands. In 2001 Kreuzlingen was sold to EPH Nautic AG . Since then, the ship has been located in the former St. Katharinental Monastery. In 1997, the board of directors decided to renovate the sister ships Stein am Rhein and Kreuzlingen . However, the fatal flood year of 1999 forced the URh to sell the Kreuzlingen to generate the funds for the renovation of the Stein am Rhein .

Association membership

The company has been a member of the United Shipping Companies interest group for Lake Constance and Rhine since 1952 , an association of the four large shipping companies that coordinates the timetables and tariffs of the members. Before that, in 1879 she was a member of the association's predecessor, the United Steamship Administration (VDV).

Route network

Between April and October, several scheduled boats operate daily in both directions between Schaffhausen and Kreuzlingen . The following stations are approached: Schaffhausen , Büsingen am Hochrhein , Diessenhofen , Stein am Rhein , Öhningen , Mammern , Wangen , Hemmenhofen , Steckborn , Gaienhofen , Berlingen , Mannenbach , Reichenau (island) , Ermatingen , Gottlieben , Konstanz and Kreuzlingen .

High and low tides can affect shipping traffic or even bring it to a standstill. The wooden bridge near Diessenhofen is an impassable obstacle during flooding . The passengers then have to walk around the bridge and transfer to another ship. In the event of a flood of more than 4.92 meters (Konstanz gauge), the Constance Rhine Bridge can no longer be crossed. The ships then only go to Ermatingen.
