The battle mountain is a 271  m above sea level. NHN high elevation of the Kyffhäuser mountains near Bad Frankenhausen in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .

Geographical location

The Schlachtberg is located in the southern part of the Kyffhäuser Mountains in the Kyffhäuser Nature Park about one kilometer north of Bad Frankenhausen. To the south, the Diamantene Aue connects with the Flut and Solgraben , which flow into the Unstrut near Artern . The federal highway 85 leads a little west past the mountain .

The Schlachtberg is one of the southernmost mountains of the Kyffhäuser Mountains within the Zechstein belt south of the ridge. The western mountainside is forested, while the hilltop and the southern slopes are mostly unforested. Here you will find the flora typical of karst regions with dry grass and meadow steppe.

The mountain allows a view to the southwest to the Hainleite and to the southeast to the Thuringian Gate and the foothills of the Finns Schmücke and Hohe Schrecke . Numerous hiking trails, such as the Kyffhäuserweg, open up the mountain region.

history

The last battle of the Peasants' War in Central Germany took place on May 15, 1525 on the mountain . The farmers, led by Thomas Müntzer, gathered in a wagon castle above the town of Frankenhausen on the hill called Weißenberg at that time . They were defeated by the princely army. Since that time the mountain has been called the Schlachtberg.
