The Schleswig-Holstein Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine e. V. (SHGZMK) was founded in Kiel in 1950 . She is a corporate member of the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine .

The purposes and goals stated in the statutes are indicative of the current work :
- Promoting research.
- Dissemination of German research results at home and abroad.
- Communication of valuable foreign research results.
- Dental training.
- Cooperation with the scientific associations, working groups and societies active in Germany
- Representation of German knowledge and experience in the field of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine .
The society currently has around 900 members, a large number of whom meet for the annual scientific conference. Each autumn, topics from the entire field of dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial medicine are discussed. On a scientific background, clinically relevant questions are reported by specialist speakers.
history
Today's federal state Schleswig-Holstein emerged from the Prussian province of the same name, which was created in 1864 after the German-Danish War . 11 years later the "Association of Schleswig-Holstein Dentists" was founded, which was then dissolved by the National Socialists .
The first suggestion for founding the company goes back to 1949. It arose during the Dentists' Day in Wiesbaden , the first meeting of German dentists after the end of the war. At this conference, which took place in July 1949, a few weeks after the Basic Law came into force , the opportunity arose to initiate the revival of the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (DGZMK) by recruiting members .
At the end of the session, however, the membership list was little more than 250 names - a tiny fraction of the previous membership. It seemed necessary to use regional forces to promote the German Society. The University Clinic for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , which was represented by two professors in Wiesbaden, took on this task for the state of Schleswig-Holstein, with Hermann Euler , President of the German Society, who Establishment of a subsidiary based in Kiel had been agreed.
In Kiel, the preconditions for founding a new scientific society were initially not favorable because of the precarious economic situation just a year after the currency reform . Since 1948, however, the university had a “teaching and research institute for dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine”, which the state government had founded at the request of the Medical Faculty of the University of Kiel.
Since then, the “Dental Clinic” has endeavored to promote the interest in the communication of new research results among the often overburdened practitioners through scientific events with lectures and demonstrations. These efforts by the dental clinic were supported by the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Dentists with funds for further training. In 1950, with a tribe of 150 members and chairman Heinrich Hammer, the new “Schleswig-Holstein Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine” was officially founded with a cash balance of DM 3,000. The deed of foundation based on the entry in the register of associations at the Kiel district court is dated May 16, 1951.
The statutes essentially corresponded to the statutes of the German Society for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine, of which our society had become a corporate member when it was founded. The statutes oblige to the promotion of research, the organization of scientific conferences and the holding of lectures and courses for the purpose of further education in the field of dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial medicine.
Training and annual meetings
The first meeting of the SHGZMK took place from 9. – 10. September 1950 in Kiel. Chairman Hammer pointed out that only scientific work combined with practical work and medical thinking could lead to success. He condemned the purely technical practice of dentistry.
The number of members rose continuously from the beginning of 150. In 1960 it was 500 members and in 1970 it had increased to 750 members. Today the society has almost 900 members, mostly dentists from Schleswig-Holstein.
Up until 1959, the company organized all of the advanced training on behalf of the Dental Association. The company was relieved of further training activities in 1959 after the Dental Association took the further training under its direction.
Since then, the annual conference held in October with a predominantly scientific character has been supplemented by a further training event organized by the Dental Association every year before Whitsun in Westerland on the island of Sylt . The cooperation between the two institutions of the Schleswig-Holstein dental profession is documented both in the complementary programs and in the fact that the respective chamber president was the deputy chairman of the society.
Current problems in the field of dentistry, oral medicine and maxillofacial medicine are discussed at the annual conferences, which, in addition to summarizing reports, provide information about the current state of research in a specialist discipline. The company pays great attention to the next generation of academics, who present themselves and discuss them with short presentations on the special fields of work.
Maintaining contact with the other German scientific societies is a particular concern of the Schleswig-Holstein subsidiary of the "Germans". This is evidenced by joint conferences held, for example, with the Working Group for Oral Surgery, the German ARPA and the German Society for Prosthetic Dentistry and Biomaterials , as well as the joint conference with the DGZMK on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Schleswig-Holstein Society in Kiel in 1975.
Chairman of the company
The character and reputation of the company were primarily shaped by the respective chairmen. Hammer was chairman from its foundation until his retirement in 1960. Theo Spreter von Kreudenstein , who until then was the company's secretary, succeeded him and organized a total of 16 conferences. It is thanks in particular to his tireless, exemplary commitment that the Schleswig-Holstein dental profession already distinguished itself at this time through a scientifically sound basis, which enabled them to self-critically rethink their professional work.
The society showed its solidarity with the newly established Medical University of Lübeck by electing the local professor for oral and maxillofacial surgery, Wolfgang Hoppe, as the successor to Spreter von Kreudenstein, who retired in 1976, as chairman. In recognition of his services, Spreter v. Kreudenstein elected honorary president by the general assembly.
Hoppe headed the society for 14 years, which traditionally continued to hold its annual meetings in Kiel, only to be "inherited" in 1990 by Franz Härle, professor for oral and maxillofacial surgery in Kiel. Härle also chaired the society for 14 years and organized an equal number of annual meetings. Matthias Kern , professor for dental prosthetics, propaedeutics and materials science in Kiel, has been chairman of the society since October 2004 .

Annual award and promotion of research and scientific exchange
Since the 25th anniversary, the SHGZMK had set itself the task of setting impulses by awarding an annual prize for the best work submitted by young scientists, which primarily aimed to achieve a broad scientific impact in the sense of the German Society for Tooth, Mouth - and orthodontics signal.
Finally, one of the company's activities is the obligation to promote research, which is anchored in the statutes. The company has fulfilled this obligation to the extent that it is financially able to do so. Since the company was founded, the equivalent of over 90,000 euros in funding has been paid out.
Scientists from home and abroad who have made a special contribution to dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine can be appointed as corresponding members. So far these have been: Karl Ballenberger, Basel, Knut Borglin, Malmö, Björn Hilding, Malmö, A. Ott, Bern, Sven Sellmann, Malmö and Frederico Singer, Meran (since 1959) as well as Benedikt Maeglin, Basel, Yngve Ericson, Stockholm, Birger Nygaard-Östby, Oslo (since 1967).
People who have made special contributions to the support of the Schleswig-Holstein Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine can be appointed honorary members. These are to this day: Georg Axhausen , Berlin (1954), Carl-Friedrich Hinrichsen , Kiel (1959), Karl Dohrn , Kiel (1962), Hans Gang , Rendsburg (1962), Heinrich Hammer, Kiel (1962), Theodor Thoring , Kiel (1962), Franz Klose , Kiel (1967), Theo Spreter von Kreudenstein (1976) and Horst Bremer , Kiel (1990).

Science award
To promote the next generation of scientists, the Schleswig-Holstein Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine awards an annual price of € 750 for a special scientific work.
membership
A full member of the Schleswig-Holstein Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (according to § 8 of the SHGZMK statutes) can become any dentist and doctor approved in Germany as well as every scientist with a university degree who deals with dental and oral problems - and maxillofacial medicine.
Any medical person licensed in Germany, as well as a foreign dentist or doctor whose license is equivalent to a German one, can become an extraordinary member .
Corresponding members can be appointed by the chairman in agreement with the board of directors who are recognized and scientifically outstanding persons from home and abroad who are particularly deserving of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine.
Honorary members can be appointed by the chairman, in agreement with the board of directors, from home and abroad, who have distinguished themselves through very special services to the advancement of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine or the Schleswig-Holstein Society for Dental, Oral and orthodontics have rendered particularly valuable services.
