Muffel's Castle in Eschenau

Eschenau Castle , also called Muffel's Castle , is a former hilltop castle and later a castle complex in Eschenau , a district of the Middle Franconian municipality of Eckental in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district .

The circular hill of the fortified complex with the former moat can still be seen on aerial photos.

history

The first traces of the complex go back to the early 11th century, when the land north of Nuremberg was specifically developed.

The castle was destroyed in the First Margrave War in 1449. Jakob Muffel did not begin with the reconstruction until 1512 , which was essentially completed by 1518. A few years later, in 1553, the building was destroyed again in the Second Margrave War and rebuilt from 1603 to 1611. After minor damage in the Thirty Years War , the palace complex was expanded.

In 1798 the Muffel family, who had owned it since 1382, lost the castle. The facility changed hands several times in the following years and was used as a post office , restaurant and dance hall. The state of construction was so disastrous that the building was called "Rumpelburg". After a fire in 1843, the castle was rebuilt in a very simplified form. It was on the corner towers , gables waived and the third floor. The tower, which can still be found on a copper engraving by Christoph Melchior Roth from around 1759, was also lost.
