Feldeck Castle (Thuringia)
Feldeck Castle

The former Schloss Feldeck was a fortification built in the Middle Ages at the entrance to the Feldatal in the Dietlas district of the Krayenberg community in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

location

The structural remains of the mighty moated castle are in the north of the historical location of Dietlas, about two kilometers south of Dorndorf. The original facility is in a protected location in the middle of the Felda floodplain, which was included in the castle fortifications in the Middle Ages by weirs.

history

To protect its numerous possessions in Dorndorf, Feldeck Castle was built in the High Middle Ages by the Hersfeld Monastery . It was a sister castle of the Krayenburg , which was also owned by the Hersfeld Monastery on the other side of the Werra. The dynasts of Frankenstein are to be named as Burgvögte von Feldeck ; they had transferred the castle to Buchonische Ministeriale , the knights Dietzel and Johann von Taft in Großentaft . With the sale of their possessions in 1330 (Frankenstein sales letter), this castle also came to the Counts of Henneberg . In 1376 Werner and Wetzilo von Bennhausen were named as Burgmannen on Feldeck, followed in 1423 by Georg von Buchenau , son-in-law of Wetzilo von Bennhausen. The family of the Knights of Buchenau broke up in a feud, after decades of dispute, from their liege lord, the Count of Henneberg, and switched to the side of the Landgraves of Thuringia . The Hennebergers therefore handed over the castle to the Knight von Prasser in 1487 and to the Lords of Wechmar in 1506. At the beginning of the 16th century it was left to its bailiff von Schmalkalden , the knight Rudolph von Boyneburgk at Gerstungen Castle , who was also the lien holder of the adjacent Frauensee office with the Krayenburg at the same time . The Werrahaufen was built during the Peasants' War and moved through the Feldatal in 1525 to the towns of Salzungen, Vacha and Kaltennordheim. The commanders and crews of the castles usually handed them over without a fight, as noted at Schloss Feldeck.

In 1533 the Knights of Hanstein are named in possession (pledge possession?) Of the castle. Melchior Rudolf von Boyneburgk sold Feldeck Castle with Dietlas in 1622 to the bailiff von Lichtenberg, Hans Melchior von Butler . From 1600 onwards, extensive renovations and renovations began, which changed the main building of the castle, originally a square residential tower. Feldeck Castle is also said to have been plundered during the Thirty Years' War ; the mansion was set on fire. In the 17th century, the estate adjoining the castle to the west was rebuilt, and the moat was probably already partially filled back then.

In the 19th century, Schloss Feldeck was upgraded by Max von Butler to a residential palace with numerous antiques . The castle remained in the family ownership of the Butlers until the expropriation in 1945 and after the reunification of Major General a. D. Ruprecht acquired again by Butler . Shortly after the expropriation, the keep and the gatehouse are said to have been torn down. The castle was used as a children's sanatorium during the GDR era. The farm buildings of the estate were irrelevant and were gradually demolished.

Structural system

Until the end of the war , the castle complex consisted of the castle building that is still in place today, a defensive wall that is still partially in place, the keep (demolished in 1945), the gate with drawbridge (demolished), the manor with courtyard and farm buildings (gradually demolished after decay) . The location of the filled moats can still be seen in the south.

The palace complex is a designated architectural and ground monument of the Dorndorf community and is privately owned. The owners offer some rooms in the castle as accommodation for holiday guests.

Name interpretation

Located in the Felda valley, the Feldeck moated castle was an important cornerstone of the Fulda castle complexes in this area.
