history

In the 9th century, a Slavic fortress of the Pschowans was located on a hill above the confluence of the Elbe and Moldau . According to legend, Ludmilla , who was later canonized, was born in the castle and married the Christian Přemyslid prince Bořiwoj around 880 . After the death of Ludmilla's father, the Pschowan prince Slavibor , his possessions fell to the Přemyslids.

The wooden fortress was replaced by a stone castle in the early Middle Ages, which was converted into a renaissance castle in 1542 by Zdislav Berka von Dubá and decorated with sgraffito .

The castle, which was badly neglected during the Thirty Years' War , was acquired by Hermann Czernin von Chudenitz in 1646 , who was elevated to the status of a baron in 1623 and a count in 1627 because of his services at the Battle of the White Mountain . Under Count Czernin von und zu Chudenitz , the castle was renovated and at the end of the century the baroque south wing was added. After the Czernin daughter Maria Ludmilla was married to August Anton Lobkowitz in 1753 , the castle passed to the Lobkowitz princes, who owned it until it was expropriated in 1948. After the political upheaval , the castle was restituted to the Lobkowitz family in 1992 , who are trying to reconstruct and renovate the castle complex. Today's owner is Jiří Jan Lobkowicz .

The richly furnished interiors of the castle with living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, the large and small salons and the concert hall can be visited.

The construction of the palace chapel, which was consecrated to Saint Ludwig, was initiated by Emperor Karl's wife Elisabeth of Pomerania . After the destruction of the Thirty Years War, the chapel was renovated in the 17th century and dedicated to Saint Ludmilla. The painting of the apostles was created by Peter Johann Brandl .
