history

Duke Christian I of Sachsen-Merseburg had a baroque pleasure garden built based on the French model. The first plans come from 1653 immediately after his arrival. The completion lasted until 1661. In the 1820s the garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné was commissioned with the design by the Prussian state. His plan presented in 1825 included the lower palace garden. He left Merseburg in 1827 because he was repeatedly hindered in implementing the plan. His plan was never fully implemented.

Existing monuments

Bust of Friedrich Kleist von Nollendorf

Friedrich Kleist von Nollendorf was a Prussian field marshal of the province of Saxony , which had its seat in Merseburg. He lived and worked in Merseburg from 1815 to 1821. Because of his merits, a bust was erected for him in the palace garden in 1825 , designed by Christian Daniel Rauch .

Iron Cross

Fountain

A fountain with a fountain is located south of the palace garden salon . A fountain has been found in the palace garden since the early 1660s, which varied over the years in terms of location, appearance and number of fountains. Today's round fountain with a fountain was built in 1992. Its direct predecessor was made in 1968 and 1969. This was rectangular and had three pairs of fountains. A predecessor around 1900, however, was also round.

Pairs of obelisks

The exact age of the obelisks is not known. There are two versions of their establishment. On the one hand, it is claimed that they were created as goal posts when the palace gardens were built in 1661. On the other hand, it is said that they were installed in connection with the construction of the palace garden salon. The second thesis is supported by the fact that the obelisks cannot be seen on a picture of the palace garden from 1664 and that no inscriptions point to Duke Christian I of Saxony-Merseburg. The obelisks are each crowned by a ball. The original bullets were replaced in 1914 after two bullets fell.

Castle spring

The castle spring is a fountain that was built in 1908 and stylistically belongs to the 19th century. In addition to the fountain basin, this also includes two stone benches . The system was repaired in 1994. The fountain is located in the lower palace garden near the weir of the Meuschauer Mühle .
