The castle hill in Koblach in the municipality of Koblach in Vorarlberg ( Austria ) is a landscape-defining, predominantly wooded small island mountain and is under nature protection. The area was designated as a nature reserve by a state law gazette in 1999 , but has been partially protected since 1971.

Name derivation

The name Schlosshügel is derived from the castle ruin Neuburg (colloquially " castle ").

The castle ruins of Neuburg are located on the northern part of the castle hill. The Rheintalautobahn (A14 / E43 / E60) and the state road L190 (formerly B190) from Götzis to Koblach pass street houses directly to the east of the castle hill .

To the north and west below the castle hill there are reed properties and protected biotopes . To the south of the castle hill is the castle forest and below the “Schloßwald” and “Straßenhäuser” settlements begin . To the south-east there are intensively used agricultural land and to the north-east there is an industrial area ("Bundesstraße")

No relevant bodies of water arise on the castle hill.

The nature reserve has the longest extension from southwest to northeast over about 720 m and the maximum width is about 360 m (southeast to northwest). In total, the nature reserve covers an area of ​​around 177,000 m². The nature reserve extends over 27 plots of land, but not those around the castle hill that are already in agricultural use or on which houses or farm buildings have been standing for a long time (plot 490 and 427). The nature reserve begins at an altitude of about 425  m above sea level. A. (to the reed) and rises to about 493  m above sea level. A. (Neuburg castle ruins).

General protective measures

General protective measures for this are according to § 4 of the ordinance that, with all impacts in the nature reserve, care is taken to preserve the nature reserve in its special ecological and aesthetic value. This is especially true when it comes to

  • To erect or change facilities such as buildings, sports and leisure facilities, streets and paths, announcements or advertising systems, lines and fences,
  • To make changes to the terrain, to excavate the soil and to store or deposit materials,
  • to reforest previously unforested areas,
  • Carry out events with large gatherings of people, operate acoustically or visually disruptive devices, set up tents and caravans ,

which is why such projects in accordance with Section 4 (2) of the Ordinance require approval from the competent authority, if not

  • the proper use and maintenance of lawfully existing systems,
  • the use of the plots nos. 1931 and 1932 for the purposes of the boy scouts , as long as no acoustically or visually disturbing impairments are associated with them,
  • agricultural use customary up to now and proper hunting use

Special protective measures to preserve the forest

As a special protective measure to preserve the forest, § 5 of the ordinance stipulates that the forest in the nature reserve must be treated with special care so that it retains its high ecological and aesthetic value. This includes in particular that

  • No clear cuts ,
  • only tree species appropriate to the location are planted (in particular no spruce , larch and exotic trees),
  • Yew , cherry and field maple cannot be felled,
  • the parts of the protected area specifically designated in the ordinance are not used for forest purposes,
  • no stand conversion takes place in the linden tree stand,

forest treatment can be deviated from with the approval of the authority. Such a permit is not required if necessary maintenance measures are carried out in agreement with the official forestry expert

  • for security reasons or
  • limited to the immediate area of ​​the castle ruins in order to avoid structural damage or to maintain the view of the castle ruins.

Criticism of the protection status

It is widely believed that this area of ​​around 17.7 hectares was placed under nature protection by the Vorarlberg state government in order to prevent the second edition of the Flint pop and poetry festival .
