description

View from the promenade

The lake is of Ice Age origin. At the end of the Ice Age there was a glacier tongue here . Today the lake has a surface of around 118 hectares. About 14,000 years ago the lake , which at that time still belonged to the Baltic Sea, was up to 15 meters deep. About 5000 years ago, the water was cut off from the Baltic Sea by the Narrow Heide spit . The only connection to the Baltic Sea was then the Ahlbeck drainage ditch . Due to natural silting processes , it is now a shallow lake. Today it is only one to two meters deep in the center. In addition, the lake lost significantly in area. Originally it is said to have reached as far as Nistelitz in the south . The name of the lake comes from the southwestern settlement Schmacht , which is no longer on the lake shore today. The Ahlbeck, which drains the lake water into the Baltic Sea, was piped in the 1950s. The mouth of the pipe section is on Binzer Strand and is now marked with a sign.

A large number of animal and plant species live on and in the lake, with 40 species on the Red List of Endangered Species . So come Bittern , Great Reed Warbler , Gray Goose , Goosander , Smew , eagles and osprey before.

The slopes of the water are mostly covered by beech forest. There are seepage springs at the foot of the slopes. Alder quarries and swamps adjoin the lake . The bank itself often consists of reed beds and bog vegetation .

At the northern end the lake borders on Binz. Here is a promenade and the Park of the Senses .

Lake restoration project

South side

For many years, wastewater was discharged into the lake from a sewage treatment plant that has since been shut down . In addition, there were nutrient inputs from agriculture. The Schmachter See was therefore eutrophied around 1990 and ecologically unstable. A heavy silt had formed. As part of a project supported by the municipality of Binz and the Ostrügen Landscape Management Association , 300,000 cubic meters of mud are to be removed from the lake. In addition, the phosphorus is to be removed from 1.45 million m³ of lake water .

After completion of the project, a nutrient-poor, macrophyte-dominated clear water lake should be created.

In the course of the renovation, the pipe-laid drain of the Ahlbeck was relocated in 2008. For this purpose, a total of 450 meters of cast iron pipes were laid from the Schmachter See to the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
