Settlement Schmerbroich reaching the NHN . The west of Niederpleis houses part of the center of the city of Sankt Augustin, which was built in the 1970s. Most of the city center is located in the Sankt Augustin-Ort district to the west of Niederpleis . The Pleisbach , which rises in the Pleiser Hügelland and flows north of Niederpleis into the Sieg, runs on the eastern edge of the village .
history
The area of Niederpleis was probably first settled in the Younger Stone Age (3000–2000 BC) and is one of the oldest settlements in today's town of Sankt Augustin, along with Menden. Lively settlement activity in and around Niederpleis is documented for the following millennia. Around 500 BC The Celts in the Siegtal were displaced by a Frankish tribe of the Germanic tribes. The place was first mentioned in documents in the 9th century when it appeared as Pleisa inferior (the Pleis located on the lower stream) together with Oberpleis (Pleisa superiore) in the documents of the Bonn Chatular . The word “-pleis” goes back to the Indo-European “Pleu”, which means “flowing, river”.
During the time under the influence of the Frankish ruling dynasty of the Carolingians , Niederpleis belonged to the Auelgau until it came under the jurisdiction of the Siegburg abbot by means of a document dated October 4, 1071 by Emperor Heinrich IV . The Niederpleis Church was previously owned by St. Cassius in Bonn. Two medieval castle mounds were found in Niederpleis. A knight Heinrich von Niederpleis is mentioned as early as 1218. After years of pressure from the Dukes of Berg , the rights of the Siegburg abbots were curtailed by making Niederpleis a parish of the Bergisch Amte Blankenberg . Together with the Rhineland, it finally came to Prussia in 1815 and as a municipality belonged to the newly founded mayor's office of Menden (later Menden (Rhld.)) Within the Siegburg district . In 1885 the Deichhaus, Niederpleiser Burg, Niederpleiser Mühle, Plato and Schmerbroich residential areas belonged to Niederpleis . In 1910 the community had 1,111 inhabitants.
As a result of the construction of the Bröltalbahn , Niederpleis experienced an economic boom at the end of the 19th century. In the last decade of the century, routes from Niederpleis to Oberpleis (1893) and from Niederpleis to Siegburg (1899) were opened. As the hub station of the Bröltalbahn, Niederpleis also gained regional importance for traffic. In the 1950s and 1960s, all sections of the railway were closed due to competition from road traffic. In the 19th and 20th centuries Niederpleis was an important location for the clay industry. The ruins of the Platowerke on Pleistalstraße in the direction of Birlinghoven and the Niederpleis clay pit, which is partly used as a waste dump, are evidence of this , from which the Mauelshagen clay works obtained raw materials and clay continues to be extracted for landfill sealing.
A turning point in Niederpleis history, as for the entire region, was the appointment of Bonn to the federal capital in 1949. As a result of the settlement pressure created by the presence of the federal government, Niederpleis experienced extensive population growth and rapid urbanization . In the course of the North Rhine-Westphalian territorial reform on August 1, 1969 with the Bonn Act , the majority of the Menden office became the new municipality (now the city) of Sankt Augustin, to which Niederpleis belongs as the largest district with a local mayor. In the 1970s, the new center of the city of Sankt Augustin was built, of which Niederpleis in the west has a small share, as well as the “Rügerwohnpark” high-rise complex that characterizes the townscape. Since 2000, the center of Niederpleis has been crossed by the Siegauen Tunnel , which is part of the high-speed line Cologne – Rhine / Main , which opened at the end of 2002 .
