geography

Geographical location

The Schneckenberg is east of the state road  455, which connects the local communities Dirmstein ( Palatinate ) and Offstein (Rheinhessen). Its summit is crossed by the border between the Palatinate and Rheinhessen.

morphology

The Schneckenberg is part of an elongated low ridge that protrudes from the west into the Upper Rhine Plain and belongs to the western fracture zone of the Upper Rhine Rift. The range of hills continues to the southwest with the Wörschberg ( 163  m above sea level ) and to the south-east with the Stahlberg ( 134  m above sea level ).

Waters

The Floßbach flows from west to east along the southern slope of the Schneckenberg , which flows into the Eckbach from the left at the Dirmsteiner eastern edge . The watershed runs over the chain of hills between the catchment areas of the Eckbach in the south and the Eisbach in the north.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Alte Sandkaut , a former sand pit, is located on the southern ascent of the Schneckenberg . After it had been shut down in the second half of the 20th century and had gained biotope character, the local municipality of Dirmstein leased the mine site in 1989 to a private company that reprocesses building materials there.

The local association Alte Sandkaut Dirmstein e. V. was founded in 1990 with the intention of preserving the eponymous sand pit as a biotope and to keep the impairment caused by commercial use as low as possible.
