SchokoFair - Stop Child Labor !” Has been committed to combating the exploitation of children in chocolate production since mid-2010 . The project is run on a voluntary basis by pupils from the Maria Montessori School in Düsseldorf and the Integrated School in Melle. The SchokoFair Group is UNICEF Junior Ambassador of the Year 2013.

General

In July 2010, through an ARD report , the pupils of the Montessori secondary school became aware of the problem that a large part of the cocoa beans obtained for the European chocolate industry is harvested using child labor and child slaves.

Almost all confectionery manufacturers get their cocoa beans mainly from Ivory Coast , knowing full well that child labor is the order of the day given the unstable conditions there. Tens of thousands of children are kidnapped and sold to plantation farmers as slaves for the cocoa bean harvests.

activities

SchokoFair demands a Schoko-TÜV law from politicians

The SchokoFair children's initiative was invited to the Bundestag twice. SchokoFair applied for a chocolate TÜV law. if possible also for the EU. All chocolate companies are required to provide complete evidence of their supply chains and if companies can be proven to have violated human rights (such as abusive child labor) in their supply chains, the law provides for lawsuits and, in the event of convictions, punishments for companies. The parliamentary advisory council for sustainable development of the Bundestag heard the students on their legislative proposal. However, your legislative proposal was not included in the deliberations of the Bundestag, as the chocolate companies are relying on the voluntary commitment to respect human rights. They also promised to eradicate the poverty of cocoa farmers and their children through the support of sustainably certified chocolates (Fairtrade, UTZ, Rainforest Alliance).

Sustainable Cocoa Forum

Federal Minister Gerd Müller told Schokofairs that he considers the Forum for Sustainable Cocoa to be a "chocolate TÜV". The Schokofairs then became a member of the forum and are the only children’s initiative to work in the civil society group.

Thanks to their participation in the Sustainable Cocoa Forum, the Schokofairs were able to give the first children's speech at a world cocoa conference in Berlin in April 2018, which received a lot of attention. They achieved that the fight against abusive child labor became a main topic at the congress.

Rally for children's rights

On the occasion of the World Cocoa Congress, Schokofair organized a rally for children's rights. 200 children's delegates from seven schools and three federal states took part in the rally in front of the congress location.

further activities

The students of the SchokoFair Group have been collecting signatures as part of their project since 2010, with the aim of handing them over to the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry in a press campaign . Furthermore, the students operate a website and use social media channels to raise awareness, produce their own radio broadcast, do press and awareness-raising work and raise awareness of the issue with protest campaigns.
