The Schrimpfkogel is 2207  m above sea level. A. high peaks of the Seckauer Tauern , which are part of the Niedere Tauern .

Location and landscape

The mountain is located between Schoberpass and Gaal . It is located in the main ridge of the Seckauer Tauern, west of the Geierhaupts  ( 2417  m above sea level ), the highest peak in the group. It is separated from this by the Liesingtörl (approx.  2080  m ). In the other direction, the main ridge goes over the Schaunitztörl (approx.  1960  m ) and the Hahnenkamm to the Kettentalkogel  ( 2120  m above sea level ), and then on to the Hohentauern Pass . On the Schrimpfkogel, the ridge branches off to the north over the Krügltörl (approx.  2030  m ) and the Kerschkern  ( 2225  m above sea level ) to the Schober Pass and the Eisenerzer Alps . The Finsterliesing rises to the north and approaches the uppermost Liesing in the Liesinggraben . To the south lies the cirque of the Donnerofen, which drains to the Ingeringbach . Both rivers go to the Mur . To the west, the Günbach runs over the Triebenbach and the Palten to the Enns . This makes the summit part of the main watershed of the Alps .

The summit is in the municipality of Wald am Schoberpaß , not far from the border with the municipalities of Hohentauern and Gaal, south of the Schaunitztörl.

geology

The summit belongs to the gneiss core of the Seckauer Tauern, crystalline basement mountains of the Alps from the Permocarbon . The moraines in the Donnerofen below turn towards the Seckau Basin and show that the Ennstal Glacier flows over the Hahnkamm.

Tours

Since there are no managed refuges in the region, the Geierhaupt and its neighboring peaks can only be reached on long day trips and are therefore rarely visited. The Schrimpfkogel is rarely climbed at all, the high trail of the Seckauer Tauern (main ridge crossing from Schoberpass) passes the summit a little below. The climbs are little marked.
