It was followed by Schwanberg Castle by the 13th century at the latest, which was inhabited by alternating noble families. After being destroyed in the German Peasants' War , the complex was initially in ruins, but was rebuilt in the 17th century by Bishop Julius Echter .
After it burned down again in the Thirty Years War , the castle on the mountain was left to decay for more than a hundred years. After secularization , the buildings came into private ownership. In 1911, the Counts of Castell-Rüdenhausen acquired Schwanberg Castle and had a large castle park laid out. Today the castle is inhabited by the sisters of the Casteller Ring community.
