The Schwarze Graben is an orographically right tributary of the Glenne in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 9.3 km.

River course

The Schwarze Graben is being built in the Wulfhorst farming community south of the city of Rietberg and drains in a south-westerly direction. After crossing the formerly independent rural community of Moese , the water first leads through an industrial area north of the Rietberg district of Mastholte and then past the village to the west. From there, the Schwarze Graben, also known as the Graft , forms the border between the town of Rietberg and the municipality of Langenberg on a stretch of more than three kilometers . In this area, the fire ditch is first recorded on the right-hand side, and then the Vennegosse , which tapers from the left in the direction of Westenholz .

Around 600 meters downstream, the Westenholzer diversion takes in another water body on the right. About 400 meters after the Schwarze Graben has completely entered the district of Langenberg at the level of the Benteler district, it flows on the right into the Glenne, which is still called Haustenbach in this area .

Characteristic

The Schwarze Graben overcomes a height difference of only three meters during its flow path, resulting in an average bed gradient of 0.3 ‰. As a lowland body of water with such a slight gradient, the Schwarze Graben has hardly any flow movement, so the vegetation of the heavily weed stream corresponds to that of a stagnant body of water. In the course of expansion projects in the 1960s was the black trench massive Sohl - and embankments, which in many sections of a channel-like character is dominant. The body of water leads largely through agricultural areas, partly also along roads. In sections there are groups of riparian trees, but without a structure-forming function. Accordingly, the water body is currently almost consistently assigned to water structure quality class VII, which corresponds to excessive damage to the water structure. Grade VI, which corresponds to severe damage, is only achieved in a few sections.

According to the 2001 water quality report from the State Environment Agency North Rhine-Westphalia, the course of the Black Trench is continuously in the area of quality class III, which corresponds to heavy pollution. In some parts a not inconsiderable ocher formation of the watercourse was found. The results report published in 2004 on the inventory regarding the implementation of the Water Framework Directive confirms this classification.

The course of the Black Trench is consistently assigned to river type 19 and is therefore considered a small low-lying river in river and stream valleys .

Watershed

The Schwarze Graben is only about 200 meters south of the course of the Grubebach , whose south bank marks the Rhine-Ems watershed in this area . There is also a direct connection between the water bodies via a system of ditches.
