The Searoad Mersey II is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered RoRo ferry that was delivered to the Australian company SeaRoad Shipping Pty Ltd at the beginning of November 2016 by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) .
history
The ship is the first ship in the world to run on LNG as fuel and use truck trailers as tanks. It was ordered by SeaRoad in May 2014 to carry out the ferry service to the Australian mainland from the home port of Devonport in Tasmania . SeaRoad was founded as a family business in the 1890s. Over the years, the company expanded its business through organic growth and acquisitions in the shipping, logistics and freight forwarding sectors in both road and water transport.
SeaRoad Shipping's business activities include the transport of containers, trailers, reefers (refrigeration units) and cars on the previous ro-ro ships Searoad Tamar and Searoad Mersey . Since the end of 2016, this fleet has been supplemented by the Searoad Mersey II with its environmentally friendly liquid gas drive. If the Searoad Mersey II proves successful , a sister ship is planned to replace the Searoad Tamar with an environmentally friendly ferry.
Ship description
The Searoad Mersey II is around 181.5 m long, 26.6 m wide and has a draft of 6.3 m with 25,410 GT.
Arrangement of cargo decks and deckhouse
The ship is equipped with three decks and two ramps with a total of 1,960 meters of floor space for rolling cargo. The main deck has space for 295 TEU on trailers , the lower deck for 160 TEU on trailers and the lowest deck (car deck) has space for 110 cars. The deckhouse with the bridge , the engine room , the mess rooms, lounges, cabins and the galley is in the rear half of the ship.
Propulsion system
Two medium- speed four-stroke diesel engines of the MaK 8M46DF type, each with a nominal power of 7,200 kW at 500 rpm, are used for propulsion, each of which acts on a variable-pitch propeller via a reduction gear . Each of these drive diesel engines also drives a shaft generator with an apparent power of 1,500 kVA . Both engines give the ship a nominal speed of 20 kn at 0.85 MCR (12,240 kW). Two bow thrusters , each with 1,000 kW electrical drive power, improve maneuverability.
For power supply in addition to the wave generators are two diesel generators of the type MaK 6M34DF each with 3,100 kVA rated apparent power at 720 / min are available. The electrical on-board network is used to supply the ship's auxiliary operation, the bow thruster and the 150 sockets for the refrigerated trailers and refrigerated containers on the loading decks.
These diesel engines are set up for operation with natural gas (dual fuel). A small amount of diesel is injected to ignite the gas-air mixture
An additional diesel emergency generator with 1120 kVA is not set up for gas operation.
A special feature of this ferry is the arrangement of the LNG tanks on board on trailers.
