Sebastian Meier

Sebastian Meier (also Meyer or Mejer , born February 24, 1594 in Lübeck ; † February 12, 1664 , ibid) was a German physician and educator and rector of the Katharineum in Lübeck .

Life

Meier attended the Katharineum and began his studies in June 1609 at the University of Rostock . On April 27, 1615 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree and from June 6, 1617 studied theology, ancient languages ​​and medicine with Daniel Sennert in Wittenberg .

In 1619 he became vice rector in Stade and in the same year he accepted a position as rector of the Güstrow cathedral school . In 1622 he became a member of the first scientific society north of the Alps founded by Joachim Jungius , the Societas ereunetica sive zetetica . He returned to his hometown in 1629, initially as sub- principal, the following year as deputy principal under the rector Johann Kirchmann and in 1643 as principal of the school for a further 21 years.

His epitaph with a portrait as a half-image and a Latin inscription is located in Lübeck Cathedral on the east side of the second south pillar and our famous Meier pays tribute to him , grayed in honor . The portrait shows him holding a book in his right hand and a pair of gloves in his left. It hung in the north aisle of the cathedral until the 19th century.

A son of the same name (born October 30, 1626 in Güstrow, † April 12, 1678) became a doctor in Sternberg and later the city ​​physician of Güstrow.
