The Seethalerhütte , once called the Dachsteinwartehütte , is an Alpine Club hut of the Alpenverein Austria section of the ÖAV at 2740  m above sea level. A. Height east and below the Hohe Dachstein on the edge of the Hallstatt Glacier and high above the Dachstein south face. This makes it the highest refuge in the Dachstein Mountains high above Ramsau directly on the border between Upper Austria and Styria . It is both a popular destination for day visitors who come over from the nearby Hunerkogel (Dachstein-Südwandbahn) and an important base for mountaineers who can go on larger mountain, glacier and climbing tours on the Dachstein from here . In winter the area offers numerous opportunities for ski tours .

Immediately next to the hut is the exit of the "Johann-Klettersteig" built in 1999. The hut is also the starting point for the “shoulder climb” via ferrata on the Hohe Dachstein.

history

The hut was built in 1929 as a shelter by the Hallstatt mountain guide Johann Georg Seethaler (* April 16, 1871, † Dec. 10, 1946), who had been the hut manager of the Wiesberghaus since 1927 . The building material for the eight-hour walk from Hallstatt was carried to the Simonyhütte at 2204 m in 1928 , then over the glacier to the Eisstein and on to the Dachsteinwarte. In 1931 the hut was bought by the Austria Section of the PES .

Johann Georg Seethaler's son, Sepp Seethaler (* Aug. 18, 1907, † Sep. 15, 1980) has been a hut landlord for 50 years. In 1979 the owner of the hut paid tribute to the longstanding work of the hut landlord and renamed the Dachsteinwartehütte to Seethalerhütte .

After the construction of the Dachstein-Südwandbahn in 1969, the supply of the hut became a little easier, since it can be reached from the mountain station in around 45 minutes. In 1979 the legendary Hüttenwirt Seep Seethaler resigned after 50 years of service and handed over to the mountain guide Peter Reitmann. During his time there was an extension and other modifications, so that the Spartan base became a cozy rest stop. In 2000 Reitmann retired as a hut keeper and handed over to Wilfried Schrempf. In 2002 a renovation took place, after which it was also possible to spend the night in the hut. In 2012 the hut received the environmental seal of approval for Alpine Club huts .

New building

Because of the desolate structure of the hut and the formation of sinkholes at the location of the hut, the Alpine Association decided to build a new one next to the existing hut. For this purpose, the Alpine Association announced an architecture competition in 2016, which the Innsbruck-based Dreiplus Architekten ZT GmbH won with a "formally innovative" design. The groundbreaking ceremony for the roughly 2 million project took place on July 24, 2017. The hut was opened on December 25, 2018.
