description
Vegetative characteristics
In sheltered locations, the silky-haired willow forms bushes with heights of up to 3 meters. They are mostly found as a dwarf shrub that grows along the ground and only reaches a height of 10 centimeters.
The simple leaves have a smooth edge and are elongated-ovoid to ovate with a length of 4 to 6 centimeters. The thickness of their hair ( indument ) varies.
Generative characteristics
The kitten-shaped inflorescences are yellowish to yellowish-brown. The capsule fruits are densely hairy.
Chromosome set
The basic chromosome number in the genus Salix is x = 19; Different degrees of ploidy (e.g. tetraploidy and hexaploidy) with chromosome numbers of 2n = 76, 96, 114 or 152 were determined in Salix glauca .
Location
The silky-haired willow grows mainly in dwarf shrub heaths , on herbaceous, species-rich tundra , in snow valleys and along watercourses. The subsoil usually consists of sand, alluvial sand or stones.
Systematics and distribution
The silky-haired willow is circumpolar in the northern hemisphere with a few subspecies and varieties:
- Salix glauca L. subsp. glauca : It is native to Northern Europe and the tundra regions of Russia .
- Salix glauca subsp. callicarpaea (Trautv.) Böcher : It occurs in North America, Iceland and Greenland .
Two to four varieties are said to be found on the American northwest coast:
- Salix glauca var. Acutifolia (Hook.) CKSchneid.
- Salix glauca var. Villosa Andersson .
