Sekirei ( Japanese セ キ レ イ , dt. " Stilt ") is a series of manga drawn by Sakurako Gokurakuin . It is since 2004 within his magazine, Young Gangan published, which by Square Enix is issued. The focus on male readers is expressed in many elements that can be described as etchi .

The manga was adapted from an anime television series that was created in Studio Seven Arcs under the direction of Keizō Kusakawa and was shown on Japanese television from July to September 2008.

action

In Tokyo in 2020 - referred to as Shintō Teito ( 新 東 帝都 , dt. "New Eastern Imperial Capital") - the boy Minato Sahashi fails the university entrance exam for the second time, has not yet been successful with women and still is moreover unemployed. However, he is very intelligent, but cannot cope with the pressure of an exam, which explains his constant failure. However, as a result of these circumstances, he is labeled a loser by many, even his little sister.

One day, attractive Musubi falls into his hands as if she had fallen from heaven. However, he soon finds out that Musubi is not an ordinary girl, but that she is a Sekirei (English " stilt ") and has chosen him as her Ashikabi ( 葦 牙 , English "reed sprout ").

The Sekirei are extraterrestrial life forms that crash-landed with their spaceship on Earth in 1999 and were found by the students Minaka Hiroto and Takami Sahashi. On board the ship were 108 life forms, which are also described as "a pillar and 107 small birds", as only one, the pillar (# 0 / # 1), was in the adult state, while another eight living things (# 2 - # 9) were present as embryos and the remaining 99 (# 10- # 108) as fertilized eggs . Due to their DNA , which largely corresponds to the human, they have a human appearance, but also have special abilities. The single-digit numbers are particularly strong.

Minaka and Takami, Minato's mother, now chair the Mid Bio Informatics (MBI) organization. They modified the Sekirei in various experiments and achieved very different results in order to then let them compete against each other in the so-called Sekirei plan . In the process, very different personalities emerged, ranging from helpless and innocent to mean and murderous.

The Sekirei themselves are looking for a worthy Ashikabi , whose kiss gives them wings, or put them in a special state in which they are much stronger than usual. Ashikabi Minato finds himself in fight scenes faster than he would like and soon finds out that several Sekirei chose him as Ashikabi , which leads to numerous problems of all kinds.

Origin and publications

The Sekirei manga series is drawn by Sakurako Gokurakuin , the first chapter of which appeared in 2004 in the first issue of Square Enix 's his own manga magazine Gangan YG . At the end of the year it was renamed Young Gangan . On July 25, 2005, the first anthology ( Tankōbon ) was published, of which 17 volumes have appeared so far (as of March 2015). The series should end with the 18th volume.

Anime

Based on the manga, a twelve-part anime television series was created, which was produced by the studio Seven Arcs . It was directed by Keizō Kusakawa , who previously appeared in the series and the film for Inukami! worked in this function. The script was written by Takao Yoshioka.

In terms of content, the anime remains largely faithful to the original and covers about the first fifty chapters of the manga series. The end was deliberately left open with the words “to be continued”.

The opening credits used the title Sekirei ( セ キ レ イ ), which was interpreted like the credits Dear sweet heart by the Seiyū Saori Hayami , Marina Inoue , Kana Hanazawa and Aya Endo . An exception was the eleventh episode in the credits of the title Kimi o Omou Toki ( き み を 想 う と き ) by Saori Hayami.

The series was first shown on Japanese television from July 2 to September 17, 2008 and was licensed by Aniplex . Beginning October 22, 2008 through March 25, 2009, the episodes were released on six DVDs in Japan.

The series was dubbed on four DVDs in German from February 26 to June 25, 2010 and published with German and Polish subtitles on Anime Virtual . The first DVD was also released in a limited version with a slipcase.

A second season entitled Sekirei - Pure Engagement ( セ キ レ イ〜Pure Engagement〜) ran on July 4, 2010 on Japanese television on Tokyo MX . The broadcasters AT-X , KBS , NBN , Sun TV , TV Hokkaido and TVQ also began broadcasting several days apart . The last episode of the second season was broadcast on September 26, 2010.

Since May 27, 2011, the anime label Kazé has released the second season in Germany on 4 DVDs. The first volume was also released in a limited version with a slipcase.

radio play

On July 25, 2007, a radio play entitled Sekirei Original Drama CD was released by Frontier Works before it was made into a film .
