Transmission systems on the Zugspitze

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transmission systems on the Zugspitze supply both Austria and Germany .

ORS transmitter Zugspitze

The transmitter Zugspitze of ORS (official name EHRWALD 1 ) was built in the 1971st A free-standing steel lattice tower serves as the antenna carrier.

The transmitter is only used to supply numerous filling transmitters in North Tyrol . Due to the extremely exposed location on Germany's highest mountain, it can still be received in the north in the Alpine foothills , in the Allgäu and even on the Swabian Alb .

Until the switch to DVB-T , the following programs were broadcast in analogue PAL :

Until 1998 the programs of the ORF broadcast at full speed towards Germany. However, under pressure from German private broadcasters, the signal in the direction of Germany had to be reduced, so that the antennas to the north and east were removed. However, after the reception of the ORF was no longer possible in Austria itself, a new antenna was installed towards the east. Even with DVB-T, only a reduced power is sent to Germany.

Telekom Austria radio relay stations

Lower directional radio station on the Zugspitzplatt

Two Telekom Austria radio stations are located on the Austrian side of the Zugspitze . The older station was built in 1958 on the Zugspitzplatt above the former mountain station of the Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn . It is still used today for radio link coverage on the western route with counter stations on the Patscherkofel and the Valluga .

Upper directional radio station on the Zugspitze summit

Further up, right on the border with Germany, Telekom Austria built another radio relay station for the new central radio relay network at the end of the 1970s. To improve reliability, this station has now been replaced by a new radio relay station on the Sießekopf , so that the radio relay station on the Zugspitze only serves as a reserve. In the immediate vicinity, also as a reserve, there are ball reception antennas for the ORF programs.

Directional radio station of the German radio tower

Directional radio station on the German side

On the German side of the Zugspitze there is a directional radio platform that is elaborately integrated into the rock below the weather station. This serves as a transfer point for radio links from Germany to Austria.

The Antenne Bayern program is also broadcast from here in order to supply the Alpine foothills over a large area. The frequency used here was originally intended for the Munich-Ismaning location , but was ultimately implemented on the Zugspitze.

Amateur radio

On the roof of the meteorological station, a German is amateur radio - relay station with the call sign DB0ZU for the amateur radio bands 2 meters , 70 centimeters and 23 centimeters with vertical polarization. On the Austrian side, there is an Austrian ATV relay for the 3-centimeter band and a cross-band relay (input 70cm, output 2m) with the callsign OE7XZR on the visitor platform.
