The transmission tower Dudelange (also known as transmitter Dudelange after the official name of the city ) is a 285 meter high freestanding steel lattice tower for the broadcasting of TV and VHF radio programs on the Ginsterberg in Dudelange , Luxembourg . The Dudelange transmission tower was built from 1956 to 1957 and is the second tallest freestanding steel lattice tower in Europe.
On July 31, 1981 at 1:36 p.m., the 300-meter-high Dudelange transmission tower was hit roughly in the middle by a Belgian military aircraft and broke in two. The falling debris smashed a nearby house and killed the couple living in that house. The pilot of the accident machine also died. The transmission tower was then rebuilt, but not quite as high as it was before the accident. The antennas for VHF are located at a height of 240 meters on the transmission tower and the antennas for DVB-T at a height of 260 and 285 meters.
