The transmitter Ulm-Jungingen was a medium wave transmitter of the Südwestrundfunk (formerly the Süddeutscher Rundfunk ) for radio. It was located on the south-western outskirts of Jungingen , about seven kilometers north of downtown Ulm. A 51-meter-high, braced steel framework mast with a square cross-section, insulated from the ground, was used as the antenna carrier.

The transmitter was switched off and shut down by the SWR on December 30, 2011 and sold to two radio amateurs two years later.

Program history

Mast base

The transmitter in Jungingen was put into operation as a small transmitter for the Ulm region in 1952 on the frequency 1169 kHz. The SDR 1 program was generally broadcast until the early 1980s . In the 1980s, the SDR 3 program was also broadcast during the day . The SWR 1 Baden-Württemberg program was broadcast from August 1998 to July 2002 . Since then, the SWR cont.ra program has been spread.

Frequency, transmission power and coverage area

Until the Geneva Wave Plan of 1978, the frequency was 1169 kHz. Then there was a change to the frequency 711 kHz, on which EMRP was transmitted until March 8, 2010 with a transmission power of 5 kilowatts . From March 10, 2010 to December 30, 2011, the SWR cont.ra program was broadcast with a transmission power of 1 kilowatt EMRP over the frequency 1413 kHz.

The supply area extended to the urban area of Ulm and to parts of the districts of Alb-Donau , Reutlingen , Biberach , Heidenheim and Neu-Ulm ( Bavaria ).

Shutdown and shutdown of the transmitter

The Ulm-Jungingen transmitter was finally switched off by the SWR on December 30, 2011, as the SWR wanted to give up the very cost-intensive broadcast of its information program SWR Cont.Ra via medium-wave transmitters in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Instead, the SWR wants to concentrate on building a nationwide coverage of its programs via DAB + .

Südwestrundfunk has sold the 4,150 m² transmitter property including the company building, antenna mast and valid operating license, but without the actual transmitters, to two radio amateurs from the Ulm area and should be used by them for amateur radio , which is suggested by two newly built antennas.
