The Senjawin Islands are a group of islands in the western Pacific Ocean in the Caroline Islands .
geography
The Senjawin Islands , also known as the Pohnpei archipelago , today part of the Federated States of Micronesia , are located in the east of the Carolines archipelago . They consist of the numerous islets around the main island of Pohnpei and two small atolls ( Ant and Pakin ) a little further to the west of it .
history
Probably the first European to reach the Pohnpei archipelago was the Portuguese navigator and explorer Pedro Fernández de Quirós . More than 200 years later, the Russian circumnavigator Friedrich Benjamin von Lütke reached the archipelago in 1828 and named it after the Russian admiral Dmitri Nikolajewitsch Senjawin . Lütke never set foot on the islands, but estimated the population at 2000 on the basis of sighted canoes.
