Minto Reef is a largely flooded atoll in the northwest of the state of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia . It is 433 km northwest of the state's main island, Pohnpei .

geography

The Minto Reef encloses a lagoon with an area of over 32 square kilometers. In the south of the reef there are several passages into the lagoon. Minto Reef is simultaneously the northernmost and westernmost atoll of the state of Pohnpei.

The closest landmass is Oroluk Atoll 100 km further southeast. Near the northernmost point is a sandbar that reaches a height of 1.8 meters, which is still not considered land.

There are no other islands.

history

Like the nearest atoll Oroluk, the Minto Reef was discovered by Arellano in 1565 .

natural reserve

The Minto Reef Marina Area of Biodiversity Significance was created around the Minto Reef , with a total area of 4204.2 hectares .

In 1999, the state of Pohnpei created the Minto Reef Marine Sanctuary . This protects a spawning area of the grouper .

administration

Minto Reef belonged to the Oroluk parish , which was mentioned in the 1980 census (with a population of 6), as one of twelve parishes of Pohnpei. The constitution of the state of Pohnpei, however, no longer mentions Oroluk as a municipality , but only lists eleven municipalities. Oroluk and Minto Reef are then community-free ( Areas Outside the Local Governments ) and are therefore directly subordinate to the state government of Pohnpei.
