Serge Madec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Serge Madec is a French regatta and record sailor . With the catamaran Jet Services V (also: Jet Services 5 ) he won several well-known offshore regattas on the Atlantic and set speed records. From 1988 to 2001 he held the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing under sail on the famous route from New York to Lizard Point (England).

The catamaran was later taken over by Bruno Peyron , extended and sailed to further records.

Life

Youth until 1989

Among other things, Madec learned to sail as a student at the large French sailing school Les Glénans . Madec achieved her first major regatta successes under skipper Patrick Morvan on the catamaran Jet Services II , alongside Jean Le Cam (winner of the Solitaire du Figaro 1994, 1996 and 1997) and Marc Guillemot (winner of the Transat Jacques Vabre 2009). They won a third place in the high seas regatta Lorient-Bermuda-Lorient , which led from Lorient in France across the Atlantic to the Bermuda Islands and back. Also third placed they were in 1983 at the regatta La Baule-Dakar by French La Baule for Senegalese Dakar (see. History of Transat BPE ).

A year later, Madec took part on board the catamaran - again under Morvan and with Le Cam and Marc Guillemot - in a record sailing trip across the Atlantic for the first time: The crew of Jet Services II set the three-year-old best time for the famous route between the New York Ambrose Lighthouse and Lizard Point in the extreme southwest of England by 17.5 hours to 8 days, 16 hours and 36 minutes.

Madec eventually became known as the skipper of the 75- foot (22.85 m) long catamaran Jet Services V, launched in 1987 . He made a name for himself in 1988 when he regained the North Atlantic record, which had meanwhile been broken twice. Madec (again with Guillemot and Gerry Roufs in the crew) only needed 7 days, 6 hours and 32 minutes and thus clearly undercut the record set by Loïck Peyron in the previous year by over 4 days.

More record runs followed in the same year: Madec also won the transatlantic regatta Transat Québec Saint-Malo with a new regatta record ; his record run from Québec (Canada) to Saint-Malo (France) was only broken by Loïck Peyron at the regatta after that in 1996. In addition, Madec won the high seas regatta Route de la découverte in December 1988 . The route led from Cádiz in Spain via Gran Canaria to Santo Domingo ( Dominican Republic ); Multihulls like the Jet Services V also had to avoid the Bahamas island of San Salvador . In addition to the overall victory, Madec also set a record for the journey from Cadiz around Gran Canaria to San Salvador, a 3884 nautical miles (7193 km) long route, which is now known mainly in France as Route de la découverte ( Route of Discovery , based on Columbus ) is known; It was not until June 2000 that Grant Dalton and Bruno Peyron on Club Med were able to sail a faster time on the Découverte route (i.e. from Cadiz around Gran Canaria to San Salvador).

In 1989, Madec won five of six stages on Jet Services V at the Regatta Course de l'Europe , which took place every two years between 1985 and 1999, and thus achieved the overall victory.

Record year 1990

In 1990 Madec (again with Gerry Roufs on board) undercut his own record on the transatlantic route from New York to England, again on Jet Services V , with a journey time of 6 days 13 hours 3 minutes 32 seconds. In the following years there were approx. 15 unsuccessful attempts to break Madec's record, including in 2000 by Steve Fossett on the 38-meter-long catamaran PlayStation . It wasn't until 2001 that Fossett managed to pulverize Madec's record with a journey of less than five days on PlayStation .

In addition, Madec set further records in 1990: He extended the longest route sailed over 24 hours ( Etmal ) to Jet Services V to 522.73 nautical miles . He also set new records for a Mediterranean crossing.

For these achievements Madec was invited to the Trophée Clairefontaine , which was held for the first time in 1990 , a regatta for which eight sailors have been selected every year since then, who have distinguished themselves as "champions" in various sailing disciplines; the eight competitors compete against each other with two co-sailors each on catamarans specially designed for the regatta. Madec won the regatta.

As the first winner of the regatta, Madec (with Arthur Le Vaillant and Mathieu Fountaine) was invited again in 2010 for the 20th anniversary of the regatta - in deviation from the usual concept of selecting more or less current sail sizes; this time, however, he finished at the end of the top-class field.

The whereabouts of Jet Services V

Madec's catamaran Jet Services V was later taken over as the Commodore Explorer (sometimes simply called Explorer ) by the French record sailor Bruno Peyron and extended to a length of 26 meters. In 1993/94, Peyron was the first to win the Jules Verne Trophy announced in 1990 for the fastest circumnavigation of the world under sail. He also set a new record with the Explorer in 1994 for the longest distance sailed in 24 hours (547.3 nautical miles), which was only broken by Fossett on PlayStation in 1999 . Peyron later also improved the New York Point Lizard North Atlantic record now held by Fossett, albeit with a different boat.

The Commodore Explorer sold Peyron to the regatta syndicate Warta Polpharma whose name she received and for which they in 2000 under Roman Paszke at the non-stop round the world race The Race took part and achieved a fourth place. Today (as of 2010) the catamaran is used as a charter boat with a professional permanent crew.

The Atlantic record crossing in 1984 drove Madec as a crew member; he set all other records as a skipper.
