Sergio Goretti

Sergio Goretti (born April 2, 1929 in Città di Castello , Province of Perugia , Italy ; † June 21, 2012 in Assisi ) was Bishop of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino .

Life

Sergio Goretti studied philosophy at the seminaries in Città di Castello and Assisi as well as Catholic theology and law at the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome . He was ordained a priest on April 5, 1953 in the cathedral of Città di Castello . He was pastor in Città di Castello and vicar of the youth of the Catholic Action as well as religion teacher at high schools in the city. In 1955 he worked for the Roman Curia and was responsible for catechetical questions in the Congregation for the Clergy and secretary of the International Council for Catechesis. From 1955 to 1960 he was the private secretary of the Prefect, Cardinal Pietro Ciriaci . He was one of the co-founders of the “Centro Studentesco Romano”. From 1960 to 1980 he worked as a synod judge in the diocesan court of the Lazio region , based in Rome. From 1972 to 1980 he was a professor at the Pontifical Salesian University . He worked for various magazines and newspapers.

Pope . John Paul II appointed him on 14 December 1980 on the Bishop of Assisi and at the same time as Bishop of Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino and donated him on 6 January 1981 in St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co - consecrators were Archbishop Giovanni Canestri , Auxiliary Bishop in Rome , and Belchior Joaquim da Silva Neto CM , Bishop of Luz .

With the union of the dioceses of Assisi and Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino on September 30, 1986 to form the diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino, he became its first bishop.

Sergio Goretti was a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue from 1992 to 1997 and President of the Secretariat of the Italian Bishops' Conference for Ecumenism and Dialogue from 1990 to 2005. From 1990 to 1995 he was a member of the Permanent Council of the CEI and from 1996 to 2005 President of the Bishops' Conference of Umbria. He was committed to the population after the severe earthquake in Umbria and the Marche in 1997, especially for the reconstruction of the damaged Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi.

On November 19, 2005, Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
