Sewdormasch ( Russian Севдормаш , short for Северодвинский завод дорожных машин, transcription Sewerodwinski Sawod Doroschnych Maschin , in German Sewerodwinsker road machinery plant ) was a Soviet and later Russian companies in Severodvinsk on the White Sea . Founded in 1939 to repair construction machinery for the construction of the city, it produced armaments during World War II. The plant became known primarily for the snow clearing technology it produced and which was built there from 1959.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the order situation deteriorated significantly, and in 2009 Sewdormasch had to file for bankruptcy.

Severodvinsk was founded in the late 1930s under a different name as a location for a military shipyard (the Sevmasch shipyard ) and was named Molotovsk from 1938 to 1957. In this context, a repair shop was set up in May 1939 to maintain and repair the construction machinery required for urban development. One of the earlier work names was Mechanitscheski Sawod No. 6 (Mechanical Plant No. 6, Russian Механический завод №6). It was not until 1962 that the company was given the name Severodwinski Sawod Doroschnych Maschin .

During the Second World War , the company manufactured armaments, primarily fragmentation and explosive mines . After the war, production was switched back to civilian goods. In particular, centrifugal pumps , winches, household appliances and spare parts for trucks and road construction machines were manufactured.

In 1959, the plant started under the name Mechanical Plant No. 6 with the production of the snow blower D-470 , which had previously been developed in another company in Rybinsk . The vehicles were based on the ZIL-157 truck from Moscow's Zavod imeni Lichatschowa . Since the plant specialized completely in the construction of these machines in the following years, it was renamed Sewdormasch in 1962 . In 1966 the 1000th snow blower was built, production expanded steadily in the following years and new models introduced. At the end of the 1970s, 925 machines were built per year, at the end of the 1980s just under 1,600 units. More than 1000 people worked at Sewdormasch at weddings.

In 1990, modern manufacturing machinery was imported from Bulgaria , including CNC machines , laser cutters and laboratory equipment. In 1992 the state enterprise became an open joint stock company .

In 2009 the company was declared insolvent after falling orders and job cuts. At this point in time, not even half of the company buildings were actively used and the number of employees had dropped to around 200. The bankruptcy phase dragged on for several years, and the business has now been completely wound up.

Products

From 1959 Sewdormasch manufactured heavy snow clearing technology based on various supplied vehicles. These included chassis from manufacturers from many parts of the Soviet Union and later Russia such as ZIL , KamAZ , Ural and MAZ . Snow clearing vehicles were also manufactured on the basis of the DT-75 tractor and models from the Minski Traktorny Sawod . The machines were used civilly and militarily and exported to more than a dozen countries, some also came to the German Democratic Republic .
