The Sharden is a ferry of the Italian shipping company Tirrenia - Compagnia italiana di navigazione that was put into service in 2005 . It is used on the route from Olbia via Civitavecchia and Genoa to Porto Torres .

history

The Sharden was built under construction number 6114 at Fincantieri in Castellammare di Stabia and was launched on September 28, 2004. The delivery to Tirrenia took place on March 7, 2005. In the same month the ship started the ferry service from Olbia via Civitavecchia and Genoa to Porto Torres.

On February 3, 2012, the Sharden collided with one of the breakwaters when entering the port of Olbia due to heavy seas , which caused the ship to be slightly damaged. Passengers and crew members were not harmed.

Another accident occurred on July 13, 2016 in the port of Genoa when the Sharden collided with the Excelsior ferry . Only slight damage was caused to both ferries.

In 2017 the Sharden hit the headlines after the captain and the shipping company Tirrenia were investigated for negligent manslaughter. The background to this was the fatal accident of a German passenger suffering from dementia who disappeared on board the ship on October 30, 2016. Her body was not found in a turbine shaft until two weeks later. The Sharden's captain was accused of lacking security.

Since the 2017 season, the Sharden has been distinguished from the other ships in the Tirrenia fleet by a striking hull painting with Batman motifs. Her older sister ship is the Nuraghes , which entered service in 2004 .
