story

Scheberghan (1976)

Scheberghan was once the capital of an independent Uzbek khanate that was ceded to Afghanistan by the border agreements of 1873 after the Anglo-Russian War .

Scheberghan was the scene of the Dascht-i-Leili massacre in December 2001 during the US invasion of Afghanistan, when between 250 and 3000 (depending on the source) Taliban prisoners were shot or suffocated in metal containers while they were being killed by troops the USA and the Northern Alliance were transported from Kunduz to Scheberghan.

Scheberghan is the stronghold of the Uzbek warlord General Abdul Raschid Dostum , who vies with his Tajik rival General Atta Mohammad Noor for control of northern Afghanistan.

On August 7, 2021, the resurgent Taliban, who had meanwhile attacked provincial capitals across the country, captured the city. The government forces and officials had withdrawn to the airport, according to the governor's office.

business

Scheberghan lies in the middle of agriculturally used irrigation land.

Since 1967, the exploitation of Afghanistan's natural gas reserves began here with Soviet support in the Khowaja Gogerak gas field , 15 km east of Scheberghan. The deposits were estimated at around 67 billion m³. Also in 1967 the Soviets completed a 100 km gas pipeline connecting Keleft in the Soviet Union with Scheberghan.

Scheberghan is an important location for Afghanistan's energy supply:

  • The Zomrad Sai oil field is located near Scheberghan.
  • The Scheberghan Oil Refinery processes crude oil for use in boilers in Kabul, Mazar-e Sharif and Scheberghan.
  • The Jorqaduk, Khowaja Gogerak and Yatimtaq gas fields are within 30 km of Scheberghan.
