The Cox Department Store in Shelburne

Shelburne is a city in the south of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia and at the same time the administrative seat of the district of the same name .

Shelburne has the third best natural harbor in the world. The Mi'kmaq crossed the Roseway River and used the surrounding lands for their summer camps long before the banks were sighted by Spanish, Portuguese and French fishermen.

history

In the spring of 1783, 5,000 settlers from New York and the central American colonies settled in the area. The promise of living under British protectorate, free land, tools, and commissions drew many to the British colony of the time. Four hundred families decided to form a town called Port Roseway, which Governor Parr later renamed Shelburne. This group became known as the Port Roseway Associates . The name of the city goes back to the British Prime Minister William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne .

A second wave of settlers arrived in Shelburne in the fall of 1783. In 1784 the population of this new settlement was already over 10,000; the fourth largest in North America, much larger than Halifax or Montreal .

The black loyalists who settled at the same time were given land on the northwest arm of Shelburne Harbor . They founded Birchtown , the largest free black settlement in North America, in honor of General Birch.

The area was also settled by Scottish and Irish immigrants. In June 1818, Welsh settlers from Carmarthen and Cardigan arrived from Wales and established the first Welsh settlement in Canada. They settled on the west side of the Roseway River, which they called New Cambria. The name was later changed to Welshtown.

From the earliest times, Shelburne had been a center of shipbuilding . The first ship, the Roseway , was built for MacLean and Bogle in Shelburne in 1786 . The Cox family also built their own ships and contributed to extensive world trade. The former MacKay shipyard was also in Shelburne at Black's Brook. Donald McKay , famous for his Boston-built clippers , began his shipbuilding career in Shelburne. Born in Jordan Falls in 1810, he left the area at the age of 16 to begin an apprenticeship in New York .

In June 1785, brothers George and Robert Ross of Aberdeen , Scotland , ran their trading company from here. The Ross brothers traded pine boards, cod, ship's knees, and pickled herring from Shelburne for salt from the Turks and Caicos Islands , tobacco from North Carolina and Virginia , New England flour , rum , molasses and sugar from the West Indies , haberdashery and tableware England and Madeira Wine . Robert Thomson, the tax advisor to the Ross brothers, was also from Aberdeen. The business closed in the 1880s with the death of Robert Ross Thomson, the son of Robert Thomson. In 1931 Professor KGT Webster of Harvard University , originally from Yarmouth , bought the house to keep it from deterioration. Today the Ross-Thomson-Haus is an authentic shop modeled on the 18th century.

In 1787 the payment of British government commissions ceased. Within a few years, many homes were put up for sale and settlers left Shelburne for England , New Brunswick and the United States . By the 1820s, Shelburne's population had dropped to about 300.

Although much smaller today, Shelburne remained the district's capital. Shelburne was granted town charter on April 4, 1907. Many descendants of the loyalists still reside in the area today.

The current weekly, The Coast Guard , is published at the same intersection where newspapers such as the General Advertiser , the Port Roseway Gazetteer , the Helburne Advertiser and the Royal American Gazette have been published since 1784 .

In 1992, Dock Street was the location for the film version of "Mary Silliman's War," based on a true story from the American Revolution.
In 1994, Dock Street and its surroundings were again the location of a film entitled " The Scarlet Letter ". The film is based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, which is set in Puritan New England in the mid-17th century.
