Shmuel Shilo

Shmuel Shilo ; ( Hebrew שמואל שילה; * December 1, 1929 in Łuck , Poland ; † October 4, 2011 in Kibbutz Tze'elim , Israel ) was an Israeli actor and director .

Life

In August 1942 Shilo managed to escape the massacre of the Jewish residents of his hometown by Einsatzgruppe C under the command of Paul Blobel and to hide with a Polish family for a few months. He was arrested in December 1942, but managed to escape from the labor camp and then go into hiding with Polish partisans . After the Red Army conquered the region in 1944, he emigrated to Israel and served in the Palmach during the Palestinian War .

After the establishment of Israel, he worked as a stage actor at various theaters in Beersheba , where he also worked as a director and stage works such as Waiting for Godot , Zorba the Greek , The Miser , Romeo and Juliet and Tevye the milkman staged.

In the early 1980s he also took on roles as a film actor and made his debut in 1981 in Sipur Intimi by Nadav Levitan . Other well-known films were Noa Bat 17 (1982) and Yaldei Stalin (1986), but also a guest appearance on Sesame Street . Also in 1986 Shilo founded the Theater des Negev , remained its artistic director until 1997 and played leading roles in two plays in 2010. In 2011 he had his last of a total of 17 film appearances in the role of "Herman" in Hearat Shulayim by Joseph Cedar .

He has twice won the Israel Academy of Film and Television's best actor award and once the Golden Hedgehog for his contribution to Israeli off-theater.
