history

"Safe Wiesn for girls and women", Oktoberfest Munich

The Safe Wiesn campaign was founded in 2003. Right from the start, the founders placed great value on broad networking with municipal and other public bodies. In this year of foundation, around 1500 people from institutions such as the tourist office , the city youth welfare office , the police , the Red Cross and others were involved in cooperation discussions as part of this networking work. Lord Mayor Christian Ude and Mayor Gertraud Burkert have been won as patrons . Solid partnerships have been entered into with the Hänsel + Gretel Foundation , Kinderhilfe Deutschland eV and Kinderhilfe Bayern eV as well as the Alliance for Children Against Violence Foundation , which also support the campaign financially, and the Munich University of Applied Sciences , which made it possible for female students to work on project studies .

One focus of activity in this first year was a poster campaign for education and prevention. In addition, around 21,000 information flyers were distributed for the first time and the campaign's homepage was created. The police commissioner's office 314 was the first major institution to take on information about the Safe Wiesn campaign on their posters that were hung up at the Oktoberfest. Further public relations work was carried out through targeted media work, which was reflected in over 100 reports in newspapers, TV and radio, two of which were in international newspapers.

For the first time, a security point was set up as a contact point for girls and women in the courtyard. It was open daily from 5:00 p.m. to midnight during the entire Oktoberfest period. In this first year 9 girls and 19 women were looked after on site. In twelve of the 28 cases, the issue of sexual violence was the reason for making contact. Seven times the problem was that the person seeking help had lost contact with her group, three times it was about theft. Most of those seeking help (21) were referred to the Security Point from one of the other contact points in the courtyard.

In 2004, the poster campaign was continued in a different framework, information cards in three languages were distributed for the first time (German, English, Italian). The Security Point was open every day during the Oktoberfest. Almost three times as many women and girls were cared for as in the previous year (79). In addition to (sexualized) violence and the loss of the reference group, the main problem areas were again thefts, but also other psychological crises and heavy alcoholism with aggression. It was again possible to achieve a high level of public attention, with over 100 media reports published.

In the years that followed, both the networking and public relations work were continuously expanded, as was the work on site. The five-year anniversary was celebrated in 2007 with a competition, and there was also a cinema ad for the first time.

Since 2010, there have been safety wristbands for Oktoberfest visitors and, in the run-up to the Oktoberfest, an awareness campaign in schools, known as the schoolyard campaign.
