Siegfried Berliner (also: Sigfrid or Sigfried Berliner ; born February 15, 1884 in Hanover ; died October 16, 1961 in Forest Grove , Oregon ) was a German physicist, lecturer and university professor.

Life

Siegfried Berliner was born in the early days of the German Empire as the son of the Jewish commercial school director Manfred Berliner (1853–1931). He was a brother of Cora Berliner and a nephew of Jacob Berliner , the founder of Deutsche Grammophon Emil Berliner and Joseph Berliner .

After graduating from what was then a secondary school, today's Tellkampfschule in Hanover, Berliners studied mathematics, physics and economics at the University of Leipzig . There he became a member of the (striking) equal student union Alsatia in the Burschenbunds-Convent . He moved to the Georg August University in Göttingen and the United States . In 1905 he was with Eduard Riecke with a thesis on the behavior of the cast iron with slow load change his doctorate . In 1906/07 he served in Hanover as a one-year volunteer in the 1st Hanoverian Infantry Regiment No. 74 .

On September 25, 1910 married in Berlin in Halberstadt born born Anna Meyer (1889-1977). After teaching at various commercial colleges, Berliner was appointed professor for business administration at the University of Tokyo in 1912 . After the beginning of the First World War became known , Siegried Berliner traveled together with 118 other reservists and volunteers from Japan to Tsingtao in the German colony of Kiautschou in China as Vice Sergeant of Landwehr I in the 7th Company of III. Sea battalion in Tsingtau and leader of a searchlight at Infantry Plant II. After three months he was taken prisoner by the Japanese and taken to the camp in Marugame on the island of Shikoku . He had to spend five years there.

At times, Berliner worked as a lecturer at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management . He founded Deutsche Lloyd Lebensversicherung and headed it as director until 1937. In the meantime, he had been relieved of his teaching post at the University of Leipzig in 1933 by the National Socialist German Workers' Party . In the year of the November pogroms 1938 he was able to emigrate to the USA. However, his youngest sister Cora became one of millions of victims of the Holocaust . Berliner's ashes were transferred to Hanover and buried in the Jewish cemetery at An der Strangriede .

By unanimous decision of the Senate of the University of Göttingen on October 27, 2004, Siegfried Berliner and other Göttingen university professors were awarded the doctorate that had been revoked during the National Socialist era .
